There is a Japanese CD

So this Japanese compilation would
the first H&O compilation to
include the promo 45 edit of
"Maneater". Can anyone confirm
this? |

I have that disc, but can't confirm if it's
the right edit since I don't have the promo 45
to compare and I don't know how to do any
editing. But I will say that it sounds like
the same edit I remember hearing occasionally
on the radio back then.
I believe the disc is also the only one to
include the single version of "Some Things Are
Better Left Unsaid".

Yes, it is the promo 45 edit. (I created that
Discogs listing, and verified the track times / edits).
I've accumulated several Hall & Oates compilations over the
years, but this one gave me a lot of unique single edits
that I didn't have before - Some Things Are Better Left
Unsaid, It's A Laugh, Say It Isn't So, Method Of Modern
Love, etc. One caveat is She's Gone - I recall the edit
here is a recreation.
It's worth noting that there's also a digital compilation
called "Single Mixes". It features 16 single remixes, 13
of which are not on the Japanese compilation. Between the
two comps, you have ~90% of Hall & Oates' single versions.
Through 1990, anyway.

Regarding the digital Single Mixes release, there is at least one track that is the LP mix ("One On One") and another that is the same vinyl transfer as the Japanese 12 Inch Mixes ("Private Eyes" [UK Mix]). Also, "Possession Obsession" is the same early-faded version that appears on Ultimate. The main thing that was unearthed for this digital release is the promo single version of "Method Of Modern Love," which is taken from a tape source.

Wasn't the promo version of "Method" on the
"36 All-Time Greatest Hits" comp and taken
from a tape source?

Now that you mention it, I do remember reading that in another thread. I don't, however, own that CD set.

I used to own it. I might have a WAV of the
version of "Method" that's on there. I think
that was also the compilation that had an edit
of "Some Things Are Better Left Unsaid" that
ran longer than the single version but shorter
than the album version.
