Does anybody know of a CD source for this single, import or domestic, besides the one listed currently in the database?
Even better: do you know of a digital source for it on iTunes or Amazon? If I could download it for 99 cents, that would be ideal!

Somebody needs to find the master tapes and get this song on CD. Maybe Bill Buster will eventually get this one on a future Eric Records release for us.

Is there something wrong with the mastering or source for
this song on its lone CD appearance (K-Tel's Behind Closed
Doors)? I just gave a quick listen and it sounds like a
tape source to me. In fact, there's about 1.5 seconds of
tape hiss audible after the fadeout of the final note. I
don't have this song on vinyl for comparative purposes, but
it sounds like a flat transfer from an original or LP
cutting master copy. Definitely not audiophile sonics, but
sounds about right for a country-pop record from 1981.

The lone database CD appearance of John Schneider's "It's Now or Never" sounds like it came from a tape source to me, Roscoe.

This was a Scotti Brothers single. All American Records owns this if I recall. Must not have been many reissue labels clamoring to re-release this one. It's even scarce on 45.

Not good, not good...
Thanks to Ed, I've had a chance to hear the K-Tel CD version of this song.
More research is needed to determine what is going on, but at least to my ears, there is steel guitar in the CD version that is NOT on my copy of a vinyl version.
Whether my version is the original 45, or from an LP I do not know... but it appears there were at least two mixes made of this song. (The vocal take is identical, and the mix is very similar otherwise.)
I'd say we need someone with the original commercial 45 to take a listen and see if they have steel guitar in their version. If not, I'd say the single mix has never made it to CD.
It would not surprise me if a "pop / single mix" was made of the song, since he was originally targeting a country audience but ended up with a top 40 hit. If what I have isn't the single mix, my suspicion is it's the version sent to top 40 radio.
The length, BTW, is identical, although I had to speed up my copy by about 2% to get it to match the CD... and even then it falls in and out of sync. (It sounds like my copy was hand-cranked or something!)
Can somebody with this 45 physically in-hand play it and tell us if your version has steel guitar in it, or not?
(It's things like this that make me think the record companies hate us!) ;-)

i just listened to the scotti brothers 02105 vinyl 45 and
it sounds identical to the version on the below cd
1981 IT'S NOW OR NEVER (the actual 45 running time is
(3:21) not (3:15) as stated on the record label)
(S) (3:22) &nb sp; K-Tel 3163 Behind Closed Doors
there is some discussion above about steel guitars on some
source, but the scotti brothers vinyl 45 and the "behind
closed doors" cd version are identical....gene.....your k-
tel version must be either the original album version or
some remix version.....

Thanks for the info, Ed. Now that we have confirmation
that the lone CD appearance matches the 45, anyone brave
enough to check the original "Now Or Never" vinyl LP to see
if it matches the 45? (Or perhaps I should clarify, anyone
brave enough to fess up to owning said LP?)

For clarification, what I have is NOT anything from K-Tel, as far as I know. It is an mp3 of a vinyl source of some kind, but it was sent to me years ago... I don't even know if it's off a 12" or 7".
My suspicion is that it's a DJ remix, although why that would be floating around is beyond me. It is absent the steel guitar and perhaps a rhythm guitar on the K-Tel CD, and the drums may be mixed slightly differently (although that could be an eq / source material issue).
Looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack now: did anybody in this list work in top 40 radio when this was a hit... and do you remember either a "radio mix" coming to your station, or playing a radio mix that didn't have steel guitar?
EDIT:
THIS!!! THIS is the version I have! (Actually sounds like the same wobbly recording I have, as well.. hm-m-m!) Notice the LACK of steel?

All these months later, I'm still trying to determine what was on the album, what was on the commercial 45, and what was on the DJ 45...
I've noticed it was released on two labels, and wondered if that had anything to do with it:
From what I can see, though, neither say "remix."
My suspicion is that the album version was "country" and maybe all of the single releases were the "remix." I base that on this page which offers the album for sale and has a sample of the song which is clearly the "country" version: Sounds Box - John Schneider - Now Or Never
...Anybody found a 45 of this song for comparison (abagon)? Or the LP for comparison?

Well,
This thread has left me very confused (not hard to do!),
because there are many copies of the song in different
formats but i'm not sure who has what version.
Ed: you state your 45 matches the K-tel CD. Does your
45 and does your K-tel CD HAVE steel guitars are do not?
abagon: you state your 45 matches the vinyl LP "Now Or
Never" ...but does your LP/45 have the steel guitars or
no?

I can confirm that the K-Tel CD "Behind Closed Doors: Classic Country for Consenting Couples" (1993, K-TEL 3163) IS the "country" version.
I'd be curious to have Ed go back over his 45, as well as Abagon, too.

Epic Records distributed Scotti Brothers then under Epic Associated Records' banner. So, Epic released this in the UK with a little Scotti Brothers blurb on the label.

my 45 doesn't sound like it has a steel guitar.....sounds
more like a piano to me......but it is identical to the
version that i on the 'behind closed doors' cd.....does
anyone want a copy of he cd or vinyl 45?....my run out
groove info is 'ZSL 02105 3AC' then machine stamped
'mastered by capitol' and then 'JAY'
