Ed, I'd be VERY interested in a copy of your 45; if it sounds like my "single" copy, then I may have to request a copy of your "Behind Closed Doors" version. I have a copy that as far as I know, came from that CD... thought it might have been from you... and it DOES have the steel guitars.
I noticed on Amazon the pic looks like the CD number is 3163-2, while our database says 3163. Now I wonder if there were two pressings of this CD! Good grief...

Gene, the "-2" is at the end of many catalog numbers, and I believe it is usually to indicate the format (in this case CD). I'm sure Pat just leaves off the "-2" for that reason; otherwise, 90% of the albums listed in the database would end with "-2."

I never gave this track much thought until this thread!
I had a copy of the 45 years ago, and don't recall which
version was on it.
It got dumped because i mistakenly thought this track was
on the Radio Daze cd's.
Anyway, i dug out some old cdr's made by friends. One
has a 45 dub of the country version, and another has a 45
dub of the "pop" version. (the noise i hear on both
sources are most definitely styrene 45's, neither was
from an LP).
I'll be interested to see what the investigators uncover
about this.

MM, if I understand you correctly, you believe that there was both a "pop" single and "country" single released? That in and of itself is interesting!
Now the question becomes which one was the top 40 hit. I assume the "pop" mix, but assumptions are always dangerous...
I also wonder if both mixes were released to the public, or if one was the commercial single and the other was a promo single.
I'm with you, BTW... not only had I not paid any attention to this single, I didn't even remember it from when it was a hit! (That makes it more difficult for me to remember which version played on the radio, of course.)
FWIW, in this thread on the Radio Info message board, a broadcaster says:

Yeah, my theory is there were 2 editions of the single
(mainly because it's the most common cause for this
issue). As for cdr dubs i have, i think some vinyl folks
might know what i mean, but a styrene 45 is subject to a
certain kind of wear you can hear. Especially when it was
played with a less than perfect stylus.
At any rate, that's what these 2 dubs i have sound like
to me.
Main thing is tho as NightAire points out, it could be
that one was on a promo.. or they changed the commercial
release at some point making 2 commercial pressings out
there...

For what it's worth, the song didn't even make it on the Radio & Records CHR/Pop chart. Despite it hitting #14 on the Hot 100, pop radio totally ignored it.

The copy referenced above on the TM Century GoldDisc does have the steel guitars, just like Ed's 45 and his copy of "Behind Closed Doors." By contrast, Gene's link to the YouTube video with the bird and cat do not have steel guitars. Another thing that stands out is the reverb on the lead vocal. The non-steel-guitars version has a very echo-y reverb on the lead vocal, whereas the steel guitar version has a very tight reverb.

Also for what it's worth, I checked my copies of American Top 40 and it
sounds like they played the steel-guitar version throughout the song's chart
run.

Both the MP3 files of the vinyl 45 and the "Behind the doors CD" from ed are the same as my commercial 45 and the vinyl LP "Now Or Never."

Aaron, I agree with your findings: Ed's 7" single, the K-Tel CD, and the GoldDisc all have the steel guitar version.
Abagon, thank you for the update; it looks like the steel guitar version was much more common than the "pop" mix of this song!
mstgator, if that's the case, it sounds like top 40 radio (when they played it) may have been playing the steel guitar version.
Although I'm curious about the source of the "pop" mix, if the album version / single version was the DJ version as well... for my station, it becomes a moot point.
...Just to double-check all the facts: are these original recordings of AT-40, or are they the remastered versions? With information as scarce as it is on this song, it certainly seems plausible (although not likely, I know) that the remastered versions might have the steel guitar version since it's the only one on CD.
If you're listening to the originals, then nevermind. :)

The AT40s are the originals (warts and all), not the remastered versions.
And it's possible of course that a "pop" promo version was released and
AT40 stuck with what they had either by choice or ignorance, so take it with
a grain of salt! :-)
