I remember the story of Thriller originally being ten songs and that the test pressing sounded so horribly compressed that they remixed the entire album, including shortening some songs and getting rid of one song (which may have been Carousel). I don't recall reading in either Quincy's or Michael's autobiographies that the original versions were released on the 12-inch singles.

I sure wish that they would release the original mix of the album, all ten songs. It would be fascinating to hear.

Just wondering out loud...isn't that true of any 12-inch single? Most of the ones I've got have vocal and instrumental parts not on the album or 45. Is it the case of an artist going back to the studio to record takes for upcoming 12-inch singles at a later date, or were they all recorded at the original sessions and just used when it came time for the single?

As we all know, Thriller produced 7 huge singles out of the 9 tracks. At that time he was so hot that just about anything he put out could sell a million copies. I'm wondering why Epic didn't release the other two songs as singles as they were sure to have been Top 10 singles too. After "Thriller" was leaving the Top 40, I recall Q105 in Tampa playing "The Lady In My Life" which wasn't released as a commercial single, but was it released as a promo single? Maybe Q105 started spinning the song as a hunch that it might the next single.

I always wondered why "The Lady in My Life" wasn't released as a single. In late 1983, Billboard ran an article on the success of the album, and had mentioned that "Human Nature" was originally supposed to be the last single. It goes on to state that "PYT", "Thriller" and possilby "The Lady in My Life" after that will all be released as singles.

After the top 10 success of "PYT" and "Thriller" (and the buzz surrounding the video) the album shot back to No. 1 in early 1984 for several more months. Maybe Epic figured if it's back at No. 1 there was no need for an eighth single(?) It's too bad as I'm sure that would have gone top 10 too. I'd love to know the real reason!

I would guess you are correct in that most cases the artist does not go back to the studio to record extra vocals for a 12" mix. They're probably just vocals that weren't used on the other versions.

"Billie Jean" is a somewhat unique case, though, in that the album version was edited down from the "Long Version." I'm sure there are other examples of this happening, but I would guess it is more the exception rather than the rule.

As you might expect, sellers of Jackson product have increased selling prices substantially. Even for vinyl 45's, the "buy it now' prices start around $30.00 and increase upwards.

In the 80s, sometimes the 12" versions were actually just the album versions marketed as 12" singles. Many dance artists had long versions on their albums that were edited down for the radio. OR, for example, as in the case with "What a Feelin" by Irene Cara, there was obviously a longer version recorded with an extra verse, and that was edited down for inclusion on the Flashdance soundtrack.

Artists usually didn't have ANY input on extended versions, so it wasn't very often that a 12" version had parts recorded specifically by the artist for an extended version. Exceptions included artists like Prince, who would actually record extra material for long versions. But remixers sometimes used studio musicians to add parts--take the 12" of Dancing in the Dark by Bruce Springsteen. There was definitely a recording session done with a whole lot of female background singers creating new vocal parts in the chorus on the 12" mix.

Many 12" single versions were remixed and extended by a remixer/producer simply using the original master tapes and reworking all the vocals and instrument tracks to extend the song.

The 80s were definitely the pinnacle of the 12" single phenomenon. They just don't make extended versions like that anymore!

Have you guys heard this? This relates to what we were saying in the past couple posts about the album being shortened before release. Check this out -- the full, unedited "The Lady in My Life" with an extra chorus and verse.

The first chorus and second verse were simply snipped out for the final album version. This must be from the original, 50-minute version of the album:

okay, this is just ridiculous. I had NO idea THAT track was an edit--but someone mentions in the comments that the missing verse is even included on the lyric sheet with the album!

SERIOUSLY, with TWO special editions of Thriller released in the last decade, they couldn't have FINALLY given us the full length album as Michael meant it to be??? Maybe NOW they will?

That was me. Yeah, anyone who has any of the pre-special edition releases of the "Thriller" CD, look at the lyrics to "Lady in My Life" -- the missing verse is there. So is the unused end tag to "Thriller," Vincent Price saying, "Can you dig it?" before he breaks into his laugh.

I will assume the lyrics went to the printer before the album was remixed and chopped down.

Curiously, what did they use as B sides on the "Thrilller" singles? Older cuts from "Off The Wall", or did they recycle B sides like they did with Cyndi Lauper singles from "She's So Unusual"? All my 80s MJ singles are promos.

This version has been released on some highly random promo CD. Unfortunately I can't remember exactly which one it's from, but I think it's a Quincy Jones CD. I'll research and get back on that!

EDIT: It's a Rod Temperton CD titled "The Songs of Rod Temperton." Found a person who has it, but won't share the song in lossless.

US 45 b-sides:
"The Girl Is Mine", "Billie Jean" and "Thriller" had "Can't Get Outta The Rain", a non lp cut as the flip side.
"Beat It" used the Off The Wall cut "Get On The Floor" as its flip side.
"Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" used an instrumental version.
"Human Nature" had Thriller lp cut "Baby Be Mine".
"PYT" utilized a live version of "Working Day And Night" from the Jacksons 1981 live album.

kind of glad they cut out the "Can you dig it" by Vincent Price! That would have been ridiculous, even back in 1983!!!

Whew! Billboard's Hot Digital Songs chart is out for the week ending Sunday. Mostly Michael. Very interesting to get digital totals for his songs. (And surprising to see the high ranking of P.Y.T.)

Hot Digital Songs represents all versions of the song, from all albums, combined together. I've rearranged these in order of total sales to date (which is the far right column). The chart postition they occupy on the chart is on the left. So here are all Michael's and the Jackson 5's entries on Hot Digital Songs, for the chart week ending this past Sunday:

You can read more about this - and more about Thriller - in a great new Billboard story. Page 4 discusses the re-editing and remix.
