I have a pretty clean copy from vinyl. PM me if you'd like a copy to compare with your vinyl copy :)

Barry Scott sent me another message today and I thought I'd share it with you guys:

<I just wish it was something I could do at this point. So many listeners ask about a 3rd CD, that after so many years, it does get to be a boring question to answer! Whoever it was, certainly knew their stuff! Stallion is #1 on my list as well!>

That's another person who wants the release of the Stallion single - and someone who probably gets a lot of requests and knows what people are looking for! This makes me want to find a way to get the song out even more. It seems like there's even more interest in this song than the music fans that have approached me about its release in the past. I don't think there will ever be a Stallion album release on CD, so let's hope some label includes the single on some compilation of '70s top 40 hits. Also, I'm going to forward this post on to my contact at Universal Records and suggest they at least release "You're the One" as an iTunes digital single.

Confession: I've never heard the Stallion song in my
entire life.

I grew up in NYC, and started listening to WABC and WNBC
around 1978. The song had evaporated by then, never to
be revived by commercial radio.

I've hosted a specialty pop radio show for over 21 years
(and counting), and I've never encountered this song
until this thread. No one has ever asked me for it or
even mentioned it in passing. I'm excited to actually
find something new (to my ears) from the '70s!

My point: Since I go out of my way to dig through the pop
oddities from years past, and I hadn't even heard
of
this song, I'd say that there's pretty much zero
demand for the song outside of this forum. I can't
imagine anyone would greenlight a CD release at this
point.

Now to hunt down the 45...

You know, I'd probably pay full price for any ONE of these songs on a
cd or maybe even on a box set. To have a legitimate cd like this would
be a dream come true! Too good to be true, apparently.

Too bad there doesn't seem to be anyone willing to put some of these
single edits (or in some cases, songs) out on the market. Guess when it
comes to finding a 45 version, the best way to get it is on the original
vinyl, poorly sounding as some may be. Argh!!!

If the label owns the rights to a song, why don't they just make it
available as a download so that they can make money on the track
instead of just sitting there not being issued?

MPH, that is my question exactly! These lower charting singles wouldn't sell a ton, but we know they won't sell anything if they are not available at all. It can't be that difficult to get a digital release up on iTunes.

A digital release for all collectors items seems the most
realistic option these days.

As for Stallion, well i can add that i am from Long
Island, and we did listen to WABC also. I actually
remembered the song from its run in 1977.

No, not a monster hit but memorable enough, because i
heard it again years later i said "wow, where has this
been"?

I think the really frustrating thing for those of us who
want these last "underdogs" of the top 40 era on CD...
There's been SO much issued of the top 40 era already -
most of it over and over again.
But the top 40 collectors keep getting left in
frustration that these same few lower charted [but often
beloved] hits keep getting left behind.

It's funny you mention that, because it's not too far-
fetched of an idea. Jimct and I were just talking about
this the other day. If the record labels knew they
didn't have to go digging in the vaults for rare single
edits/mixes--if they knew we could supply our own
sources--how difficult or expensive would it be to
license songs for a compilation like this?

It's a fantastic idea. I've always wanted to put out
CDs. However, the labels don't like to license things
unless they can be assured of a certain amount of units
sold. Also, if they think something has potential for
sales, they will sit on it or charge crazy fees. And,
getting the right tapes/masters? let's not even talk
about who would be in charge at this company and who
would decide what/ Stereo? Mono? Song version if there
is more than one?

Well, because of all the positivity/interest in both releasing Stallion and a whole Universal comp, I was going to send a link to this post to my 2 Universal contacts and suggest they release all this stuff (as I previously mentioned). However, Ron's (crapfromthepast's) post about Stallion and Smokin' Tom Gary's post about a Universal CD are so negative against the ideas and they shoot down both ideas so explicitly and in such detail that these 2 posts alone would undo any interest I thought I'd get if I sent Universal over to this board to read this thread. So I decided against the idea.

I don't want to dissuade anybody from pursuing getting a
song out into the public. Heck, I'd be the first in line
to buy a CD with the track on it. But realistically, no
one under 45 years old will know the song (ironically,
probably because it's never been released on a CD and
would never have gotten airplay on CD-based retro shows
like mine).

A "digital 45" mp3 seems like a no-brainer. Someone
would have to spend an hour of studio time pulling the
master tape, playing the master tape, and tidying up the
file, and that's it. No cover art or liner notes to mess
with. I'd certainly buy the track for a buck.

Playing devil's advocate to the last post...

I am well under 45, know the Stallion song (but not from 1977), and would be the second in line to buy a CD with the song on it.

iTunes and Amazon did a pretty nice job releasing those "Lost Hits of the [Decade]" compilations. I don't know how well those sell (or what the source of those songs is--- many may be vinyl), but I snatched those things up as soon as I found them. I think that a song like this (and frankly all the songs listed in the first post) would sell well enough online to justify a digital CD at the very least. They must sell enough to break even, I'd guess.

Those iTunes-only "Lost Hits of the '70s" and "Lost Hits of the '80s" (each with two volumes) were released by Capitol/EMI in 2010 (before Capitol was bought by Universal) and come from their master tapes in the vaults - not vinyl. I think it would be great if Universal did the same thing - also Sony and WB. But Universal is the label most in need of something like this. They have LOTS of singles and single mixes that they've just never released in any digital format.

To Edison Lite:

I'm pretty sure that JL328 was talking about a *different* 'Lost Hits Of The...' series. Ya know, the one with Gene Redding's "This Heart" with a stylus skip... [ouch!]

Where exactly is the skip on "This Heart"?

To EdisonLite:

I don't remember, I deleted the file!

For more info search this messageboard for Gene Redding; Bill Cahill & I both commented on it a couple years back.

OK, I did a search on Gene Redding (found the post by typing it into a search for "Message Body", not "Topic Subject"). In there, Mark M points out that the file has been replaced in iTunes, spotify, and everywhere with a flawless copy from master tape. I agree. I got this just a few months ago and there was no evidence of any vinyl (even when studying it closely under headphones) and nothing skipped! So I'd say EMI/Capitol replaced it - probably not because of it being from vinyl but probably because of the obvious skip that must have been on the previous file, causing many purchases to complain.
