Ok Jim sent me a dub of the German 45, as well as a dub
of the original LP version. It was interesting to her the
mix differences after all these years.

Jody Thornton wrote:
The beginning from :00 - :18 had
the overdubbed keyboard. The first edit halves the
guitar solo, removing 2:37 to 2:57 (both on the
downbeat). Then at the end, the first half of the last
guitar solo is removed from 4:21 to 4:40 (going by LP
times).

I was about to post the same report Aaron did because I
had this page opened for awhile and didn't refresh. I'll
agree: Jody, very good memory! All you forgot was the
early fade.

I'll add a note though - the German 45 runs at a slower
pitch than the CD rip from "Actual Miles" but I do not
know how it compares to the U.S. 45 pitch.

Seems pretty apparent that this edit was played here in
the U.S. by a few stations at least.

I thought I was going crazy for a bit ... lol. You know how sometimes you swear you remember something some way, and everyone seems to indicate (by good and logic reasoning) that it's not the case? ...lol Well I'm glad to know the version exists somewhere.

starts at 3:35 and ends with guitar fade and kick em
when they're kick when they're down mixed into fade.
Only 192K but if anyone wants to hear this edit PM me.'
It is the first time I have ever heard this edit at all!

Can you find a matching listing on discogs for it?

Checked every listing for all countries and promos.
All I saw was 5:38 time on singles and 12 inch listings.

Sounds like a custom edit.

It is a custom edit. Wish I knew who did it.
The download did not say where it was from.
Probably something similar to a TM service, but not
them.

Waited for someone to mention this, but no one did.

The LP version, besides not having the subtle keyboard
overdub at the beginning and softer telephone rings
toward the end, has another noticeable difference:
instead of just the washing machine sound at 1:34, the
teletype machines can also be heard.

After the original LP version was gradually phased out
of existence, I began to wonder if I'd just imagined
it because I hadn't heard it since I bought the
cassette in the '80s.

I always thought this would have been a great song for
a remix, but I guess Henley didn't come around to
remixes until All She Wants To Do Is Dance.

If anyone has a HQ dub of the original LP version, let
me know.

I remember this mix as well, but I found this Global News YouTube promo that used it. It sounds like the mix.

Aaron,

Any chance you have the info on Jim's German Short 45? I wanted to go from unknown in my file system to where it actually came from. Thanks!

I did a closer comparison of the LP version and the 45/CD version, and noted the following differences:

The 45/CD mix has:

• additional keyboards on the intro
• no teletype noises in the break at 1:32 and 3:29
• a slightly longer delay on the vocal echo throughout the song
• a slightly different vocal take on the line "you don't really want to know just how far it's gone" at 3:00
• quieted or removed guitar chord on down beats during the verses at 1:57–2:14 and 2:55–3:13
• differently panned and slightly louder telephone ringer noise at 3:36 & 5:17–end.

I went ahead and added this info to Wikipedia.

@Jody Thornton - The countdown shows you heard the German 45 edit on must not have included American Top 40. Here is what they played:

• 1982-11-13: LP version, faded at 5:25
• 1982-11-20: 45 version, faded at 5:19
• 1982-11:27: LP version, faded at 5:17
• 1982-12-04: LP version edited at 2:14 to remove guitar solo & next verse, faded at 4:18
• 1982-12-11: LP version, faded at 5:22
• 1982-12-18: LP version edited at 2:14 to remove guitar solo & next verse, faded at 4:28
• 1983-01-08: LP version, faded at 5:30
• 1983-01-15: LP version edited at 2:14 to remove guitar solo & next verse, faded at 4:28 (1st play) & 4:12 (2nd play)
• 1983-01-22: LP version edited at 2:14 to remove guitar solo & next verse, faded at 4:23
• 1983-01-29: LP version edited at 2:14 to remove guitar solo & next verse, faded at 4:29
• 1983-02-05: LP version edited at 2:14 to remove guitar solo & next verse, faded at 4:23
• 1983-02-12: LP version edited at 2:14 to remove guitar solo & next verse, faded at 4:17
• 1983-12-31: 45 version edited at 1:37 to remove 2 verses & guitar solo, faded at 4:00

I assume their edits were done in-house. The LP edit removes 0:48, and the 1983 year-end edit removes 1:18.
