I just stumbled across a second US promo 45 for "In Your Eyes" (PRO-S-
2602), which has the LP version on both sides and a printed time of 5:22. If
anyone recalls hearing the LP version on the airwaves during its chart run,
this promo may be one explanation.

I honestly don't remember hearing "In Your Eyes" much at all back in the '80s, so I can't recall which version got airplay during either of the song's chart runs. Of course, the LP version is what radio has been playing exclusively for years now... which is too bad because the 45 version and radio edit with the alternate verses is superior, in my humble opinion.

Aaron..... All I ever remember hearing on the radio was the LP version and
now I here the 1989 WTG reissue version.

I am still confused by this track. From reading the thread and knowing
what I know, there seems to be 3 versions:

The LP version
The Original Geffen 45 version with a listed time of 6:15
The WTG re-release (in 1989) with a listed time of 4:53

I am very familiar with the album version and the WTG re-release which is
a remix and has added verses towards the end. I have never heard the
original Geffen 45 from 1986. Is the original 45 a remix like the WTG re-
release or is it the same mix as the LP but only longer?

To Fetta:

The original commercial 45 is the unedited version of the WTG remix (a/k/a short side of the original promo 45).

Thanks Andy...... I didnt even realize that the WTG version was on the
orignal promo 45. Maybe that makes sense as to why I've only ever heard
the LP and the WTG version.   The 6:15 time on the original 45 may have
been just too long to play, especially with options that were shorter in
length......especially for a song that didnt even crack the top 20 (which still
amazes me).

There are actually four versions, all released in 1986, that I know of:

1. LP version (5:22) (on So LP and one of the promo 45s)
2. 45 version (6:15 listed time, actually runs 6:16) (on Geffen 45 and 12" singles - never issued on any CD that I'm aware of)
3. edit of 45 version (4:36 and 4:53 listed times, but they both run 4:58) (on one of the promo 45s and later issued on promo CD to promote "Say Anything")
4. "Special Mix" (on b-side of US 45 and 12" singles)

To Fetta:

AOR played the 6:15 version at the time 'cos it was serviced to them on promo 12" [Geffen PRO-A-2558] with no 4:53 edit.

P.S. The listed time of the promo 45 short side was 4:36 even though it timed out *near* 4:53.

Andy

edit: I see Aaron timed it out closer to 4:58!

I actually timed out a copy years ago, and it ran 4:58 just like the promo CD.

:D Looks like we're all posting at the same time.

I should also clarify that my 6:16 timing of the full-length 45 version comes from the 12" single. Others have timed their 7" copies to be a few seconds shorter (see page 1).

I just re-timed the short side of the promo 45, and I'm coming up with a time of 5:00. Deadwax is 7-28622-DJ SR2.

Just today, I obtained a promo CD single for "In Your Eyes" that I had never seen before.

WTG Records (PSK 1691)
1. Live Version (listed 8:45; actual 8:44)

It doesn't have an insert, and the only credits on the disc say that it's taken from the soundtrack to "Say Anything..." There's no indication of where the live recording was made, but apparently it was issued on the B-side of the 1989 WTG stock 45.

I just found that the reissue "Back To Back Hits" 45 b/w
"Sledgehammer" (Geffen 21987) has a misprint. It is
listed 6:15 but fades around 4:55 so is likely the promo
edit.

Both the Single Version and the Special Remix of "In Your Eyes" made their digital debut last Friday on the download-only Peter Gabriel collection called "Flotsam and Jetsam." It contains a number of other rarities as well, including both extended mixes of "Sledgehammer." It is downloadable by track in flac format on Qobuz:

Not spending that crazy amount to get the tracks I want. If anyone is a huge Gabriel fan and already has them, send me a private PM. How did you find out about this Brian W?

Great find, Brian! Rich, you can buy individual tracks on the release.

Just wanted to add that for those looking for the 4:58-ish radio edit of the Single Mix of "In Your Eyes", as issued as the promo 45 in 1986 and later on the 1989 commercial 45, it has also recently been reissued digitally on Peter Gabriel's 'Rated PG' collection, available at the same locations as the 'Flotsam and Jetsam' collection mentioned above.

FYI, I am not fully convinced that this new transfer of the 4:58 edit is taken from the master tape, as there are some pops toward the end of the file that *could* be vinyl noise (or it could just be interference that got into the mix when the edit was created … I am undecided). The 6:15 version from 'Flotsam and Jetsam' sounds fuller and richer to my ears and can be edited down to successfully recreate a good-sounding version of the 4:58 edit without too much trouble.

BTW, the "Rated PG" collection gets a digipak CD release on June 12th (just in a few days), but the time listed for "In Your Eyes" is 5:07. Also gets released on black vinyl on the same day.
