Billy's new greatest hits album will be released in December as a
unique project in Japan!
Here is the information about this album

Entitled "Japanese Singles Collection - Greatest Hits", both DISC1 and
DISC2 are over 79 minutes long, pushing the limits of CD recording
time, and contain all the singles released in Japan from 1973 to 1994
(39 songs excluding 12cm maxi-singles) in the order of their release,
with the latest digital remastering to match the US 7" single version in
2021.

The DVD of DISC3 includes all the music videos Billy has ever
released, as well as the 1977 Carnegie Hall show, 1978 BBC TV show,
1981 Sparks show, 1982 Long Island show, 1984 Wembley show
Russia in 1987, and Yankee Stadium in 1990.

In addition to the live footage, it also includes the new animated music
video "Scenes From an Italian Restaurant," which was recently
released to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his solo debut.

It is a 185-minute music video collection with a total of 42 tracks (4 of
which are on DVD for the first time in the world and 5 in Japan), the
largest volume in the series.

In addition, the booklet includes a faithful reproduction of all the
Japanese single jackets in 12cm CD jacket size, making this the
ultimate collection.

"Attack on That Girl." Hilarious.

I don't have my hopes up, though, since Sony released a
Cyndi Lauper singles collection a couple years ago in Japan
and it didn't have ANY of the single versions on it -- they
were all the album versions.

Sony Japans Boz Scaggs singles collection from a few years ago was
a mixture of single and album versions. I dont believe it contained any
previously unreleased-on-CD single versions.

Apparently, "Sometimes A Fantasy" was never released as a single in Japan, hence its absence from the track lineup.

It looks like "Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)" isn't on this new compilation, either. The single lacks the
motorcycle sounds near the end of the song, I think?

On the Japan 45s "Sometimes A Fantasy" is the b-side to
"All For Leyna" while the b-side of "The Stranger" was
"Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)."

If you notice the five songs on disc 1 with the asterisk
are all songs that were not top 40 US hits. Another one
not included is "She's Got A Way" which was the b-side of
"Los Angelenos."

Hopefully they do include all of the correct 45
versions/edits (and yes some of the previous Japanese
Singles Collections have not). I'm also looking forward
to the DVD.

They did a CD3 reissue in Japan of "The Stranger / Movin'
Out" in the late '80s or early '90s, which I purchased
long ago in the hopes of getting the 45 version of
"Movin' Out," but it's just the album version. Not sure
if it was like that on the original Japanese 45 or not,
but I would think probably, since the only reason the US
45 does not have the motorcycle effects is that it was
issued in advance of the "Stranger" album, wasn't a hit,
then was reissued after "Just the Way You Are" was a
hit, using the original 45 stamper.

Billy Joel is one of the few artists of his generation that quit while they were on top. He is also one of the hardest to assemble 45's on CD for. So glad they are coming out with this set!

I don't have this import, but I found the listed times on
Tower Records' Japan site. Based on those times I have
determined several of the versions that they included on
this release. If the times are accurate then it's a mix
of 45 and LP versions.
