One of those weird songs from the charts, back when just about anything was worth tossing up on the wall to see what would stick.
Only a minor detail, but I heard a new intro fade-in on the Album "The Very Best Of Helen Reddy (1993).
A different compilation, "The Woman I Am: The Definitive Collection" seems to have the song the way I remember it, starting with a medium drum beat intro.
Is this a difference worth mentioning? Was the fade-in version used in different regions?
I see the song is in a few threads here, but I didn't see any discussion about the song directly.

I'd like to see what others have to say about this one. This was one of my favorite songs at the time (I was 8) and I
frankly don't recall ever hearing it fade-in at the beginning like I've heard it on some CD compilations. It's pretty
subtle, but it's there. I'm now wondering where that fade-in originated? I like it, as it actually adds to the drama of
the song.

It's possible that your local stations just cued further
into the song where the intro is louder.

I just listened to the song from "Free and Easy" and there
is NO fade in. Everything is at the same volume.
Ignore my comment above above the stations cueing in
further. I didn't read Dave's initial post.

I wonder if the fade in version started with Greatest Hits
(And More)?
Over on the AnotherProf page on YouTube, the 45 he posted
also has NO fade in. So, Paul, your memory is correct.

I'm glad this song came up as you're right, I don't
remember a fade-in when it was a current in 1974.

I got the 45 of this song for Christmas in 1974 when I
was 7. Even back then I can recall there was no fade-in
on it. When I got the "Greatest Hits And More" CD years
ago I was disappointed that it had the fade-in. It kind
of messed up the song for me. The fade-in is also on a
compilation whose title I believe is simply "Helen Reddy"
and is 2 CD's with all 20 of her Hot 100 hits at 10 songs
on each disc.

I believe that it first turned up with a fade-in on Greatest Hits (And More) (1987). Too bad, because the sound quality is excellent. (I also recommend the Dr. Hook and Glen Campbell collections with the same title, released around the same time on Capitol.)
The same analog transfer is used on:- the cheapie best-of 10 Best Series (1991) - digitally identical
- Time-Life's AM Gold Vol. 21 1974 (1996) - digitally exactly 1.2 dB louder
- EMI UK's Time To Remember 1975 (1996) - additionally truncates the fade; avoid
- Rhino's Billboard Top Soft Rock Hits 1974 (1997) - yes, this Rhino series uses existing analog transfers, much like Hang The DJ
- Time-Life's 2-CD Singers And Songwriters Vol. 8 Mid-'70s (2001) - digitally exactly 1.2 dB louder
- Razor & Tie's I Am Woman: The Essential Helen Reddy Collection (1998)
- EMI UK's The Very Best Of Helen Reddy (1993)
- TM Century track no. 0013842
These are all the copies I have of the song! They all rely on just one mastering, which just happens to add a fade-in.
I was a little too young to hear this on the radio in 1974, and never realized that the actual hit didn't fade in, but actually started at full volume.

Well, it looks like most folks also remember the no-fade-in version like I do. I was maybe 13 or 14 when this dropped, and I learned a new adjective, "Touched" that year.
Another more humorous semi-factoid, "Semi" because I don't really know if this was actually happening in other families at the time, but we often watched all the regular TV shows.
There was a skit on the Carol Burnett in which she would phrase the word "Died" in an exceptionally Low tone. Something like "He Dieuuuuud." We members of the family would
almost always repeat it this way as a fun way to express that lyric in the song. Carol was funny when she said it in this way, and so was my mom.
As for the actual fade intro, I did try to give it a try a few times. Unlike Paul's appeal, I feel it adds almost nothing to the song. Apologies where needed.

first place and how it found its way onto a few of her
hits comps.

As noted in the OP, the release titled, "The Woman I Am: The Definitive Collection" has the non fade-in version too.

Just to make it more suspenseful... The version on the LP has a tiny bit
more audio in the very beginning of the intro versus the one on the
"definitive" cd...

Sometimes all it takes is one negligent or inattentive mastering
engineer and a less than perfect transfer becomes the new
digital master. Could be that someone was asleep at the switch
in the mastering studio. Or maybe they were working with an
analog master tape that had some type of defect at the
beginning of the song and tried to work around it rather than
requesting a better copy.
I've heard songs that had the first note clipped or fade endings
that were cut off too soon that were then issued that same way
on multiple other CD's. For years the incorrect ADD
remixes created for the Capitol Collectors Series were used on
other compilations including a major Time/Life country series.

Hmmm, I've been eyeballing a set of those Capitol Collector's Series discs. I'm guessing I ought not pick them up?
Also, which Time/Life Country series are you referring to? I have a number of those on the shelf.

Actually, they're great to have!
Ron Furmanek did an amazing job on them.
When he had multi-tracks he remixed them for *optimum
sound quality*, not necessarily accuracy to to the
original 45 or LP mix (as they oftentimes had longer
fades or studio countoffs).
The cuts that were only available in original mono (or
two-track stereo mixdown) were among the best transfers
available at the time of its release.

I'm primarily referring to the country artists in the Capitol
Collectors Series. However one of my friends is a serious pop
music collector and told me that pop artists in that series have
similar issues.
To be specific the MONO & AAD STEREO versions
are generally OK. The problem is the ADD remixes.
Clearly they did not use the original analog stereo versions as a
guideline so the new ADD remixes they created sound very
different.
The Liberty Legendary Masters series suffers from the same
issues with ADD remixes.
Unfortunately for many years those ADD remixes were licensed
to other companies requesting those tracks. The ADD Capitol
remixes of Merle Haggard & Sonny James hits were used for
the 1966 & 1967 volumes of the Time/Life Country USA series.
Swinging Doors on the 1966 volume is actually an alternate take
rather than the hit version. There are other issues with several
volumes in that Time/Life series but those would belong in a
separate thread.
The ADD remixes for Merle & Sonny were also used for Razor &
Tie hit compilations and the Merle Haggard volume of the
Capitol "Ten Best Greatest Hits" series among others.

If you like revisionist history and enjoy "alternate versions" of
hits then those ADD versions fill the bill. But if you want songs
that SOUND like the ORIGINAL VERSION from back in the day
they missed it by a mile. At the time those were issued the
correct mixes of many of the songs were not available
elsewhere on CD which made them even more disappointing to
those who purchased them expecting to hear the original
versions.
If I was programming an oldies radio station I would NEVER
use those ADD remixes.
