Does anybody know if there is any accurate source for a list of all Top 40 45s that have been commercially issued with a picture sleeve (or available in promos)? Following information in Joel Whitburn books, I´ve been searching for some picture sleeves through Ebay for some time now which I have never seen for sale (for example Osmonds' One bad apple or Cat Stevens' Two fine people).

"One Bad Apple" must be an error in the book, but there definitely was a US picture sleeve for "Two Fine People" -- Whitburn shows a photo of it on his Music Vault website. (Which I can't post because it's pay-only.) It must be rare, though -- I am unable to find another photo of it on the Internet.

It could be that the "Two Fine People" picture sleeve surfaced at only one plant during the latter stages of the single's pressing run. Both of the promo copies I received came in standard factory sleeves.

The "One Bad Apple" PS does exist. It credits the group as The Osmond Brothers. We put it on a disc of rare picture sleeves several years ago.

Mm... I was just assuming because it's not shown in the Record Research MusicVault.

Another uber-rare one is the P/S for "Holly Jolly Christmas" by Burl Ives. Not sure if that was promotional-only or what.

As a source I have used a book by Charles Szabla (45rpm picture sleeve price guide)together with Joel Whitburn´s Top pop singles book. The former doesn't list picture sleeves such as Eddie Money's "Take me home tonight", Paul Simon's "Gone at last" or Supertramp's "Bloody well right". I wonder if there is another book (or webpage) on this subject.

I just realized that we actually have a picture of the "One Bad Apple" sleeve on page 672 of our latest Top Pop Singles book!

Is every sleeve that charted on the Hot 100 shown in the Record Research vault? The reason I ask is because there are a number of sleeves I've been on the hunt for forever, and I'm wondering if they actually exist. If they do, I'd at least like to see what they look like:

stuff like:
Alarm "Sold Me Down the River"
Marty Balin "What Love Is"
Carpenters "Sweet Sweet Smile"
Donnie Iris "Injured in the Game of Love"
Police "Walking on the Moon" (1986 version)

Anyone have any info on the above? Do all of those sleeves actually exist? I'd love to track down copies...

Ian, of those sleeves that you mentioned above, I see pictures for 3 of them in the Music Vault (Alarm, Carpenters & Donnie Iris). Not every sleeve was photographed for the Music Vault, but the majority of them were. If we list it in the book, then we have a copy of it in our collection. IMO, our Top Pop Singles book is the single best source for finding out if a chart hit came with a picture sleeve. Some of them a quite scarce and finding a copy can take years.

Also, be sure to track down his first single, 1979's "Bring on the Eighties"/"Because of You" (on the indie Midwest National label), as neither ever appeared on any of his albums. Oh, and can someone please tell me why the fabulous "Do You Compute?" wasn't at least a top 40 hit?!? :-)

www.45cat.com shows the US picture sleeve, rnell. It's a great resource. (They don't have either of the first two sleeves you listed in the thread, though.)

Bumping this one up as it relates somewhat to the forum topic. Back in the 1980's, I collected many 45's. However in some cases, a record I had bought that had a record company or white sleeve, I'd see later that had a picture sleeve. I think I know the reason for this but did it have to do with different pressing plants and/or printing a selected number? Also, I couldn't understand why some were released with 2 different picture sleeves ("Addicted To Love" Robert Palmer, "Coming Around Again" Carly Simon, "Tell It To My Heart" Taylor Dayne, "Heartbeat" Don Johnson, etc.)?

Can't speak for those songs, but most Columbia singles from the 80s had slightly different picture sleeves for promo 45s vs commercial
ones...the promo sleeve made no mention of the B side.

A bit OT, but what (if any) market is there for sleeves? Beginning in the early 70s, I replaced them with generic sleeves and stored
the picture ones away to prevent damage/wear. I find that I rarely look at them, and as I get older and try to downsize just wonder if
there's any market for them.

A couple summers ago I took a ton of LPs I rarely played and sold them to a dealer. At the same time I asked if there was a market for
picture sleeves and was initially told "yes", but then the guy said something to the effect "hey, there's no record in here", which
implied that without the record the sleeve has little value.
Anyone know where/how I might monetize these? I don't know if there's anything rare/collectable in there or what is even considered
collectable.

Yes, there is a collector's market for picture sleeves.

Seems like the usual suspects (Elvis, The Beatles, etc)
still command decent prices. Of course, condition is
everything. It certainly doesn't hurt to have the record
inside, but I don't think it's totally necessary. If you
keep the record inside too long, you could get ring wear,
which devalues the sleeve quite a bit.

Check the sold listings on e-Bay to get an idea of prices.

BTW, there is also a niche market for original company
sleeves. I know a dealer in the Milwaukee area that
always tries to match the record to the era-appropriate
company sleeve.

I’m always looking for clean picture sleeves that I might not have for my
website. I scan them and clean them up in photoshop. It’s a hobby of mine
going back to about 20 years ago now.

As far as different sleeves for the same song I know that if it was on a
soundtrack it could get a different sleeve. Carly Simon, Blondie etc. fall into
that category. For Robert Palmer I think the music videos getting big might
have forced an image change for the pic sleeve. Don Johnson no idea really.
Maybe it got traction and became a hit and they didn’t like the original
enough to keep it or it was a short picture sleeve run at first and took
advantage of a re-press to change the look.

Clean 70s rock picture sleeves are what I’m really lacking. Don’t care too
much for Beatles or Stones since most can be found cleaned up, at least a
descent amount, on other sites.

I don’t have to like the song to have interest in the picture sleeve and
honestly I couldn’t care less about having the record, unless it’s an artist I
like a lot. Yea I know, kick me out of the forum lol. I just have to like the
picture sleeve itself.

I have 47 or so boxes of 45s with pic sleeves, with company sleeves, no
sleeves or just the picture sleeves. I need to sell or whatever most of my
collection. I’m the crazy dude who looks just for the picture sleeve and I
used to buy in bulk on eBay about 15 years ago from people who had the
records and picture sleeves from juke box companies or something like
that. That’s how I ended up with 10, 15 or so of the same picture sleeves for
some 80s artists. I bought lots of just picture sleeves. I was told that most
of the time as soon as the records were received for the jukebox they were
taken out of the sleeves and really never put back in them. So the condition
overall was excellent with no ring wear! Most had a few staple holes or
staples though from where the jukebox strip was attached long ago.

Anyway sorry for the ramble. It’s a passion hobby of mine. Always like
talking about picture sleeves.

Not sure if I can mention my site here. Don’t want to run afoul of any rules.
No big deal anyway. I don’t get much traffic since it’s not a popular topic I
guess. I do have over 3000 cleaned up picture sleeves on my site. Probably
over 1000 more I need to scan at some point. I usually do around 20-40 a
month but sometimes I take a few months or weeks off.

Ask question if you have them. I’ll do my best to answer them from my own
experience as a picture sleeve collector.

I found another picture sleeve in my collection that has 2 different covers.
Simple Minds “Don’t You (forget about me)”. They added the Breakfast Club
info to the front.

Anyone know what the criteria was for getting a square top sleeve or a
rounded top etc? Was it where it was printed? I have found some picture
sleeves that were produced both ways. I prefer to show the squared off
version on my site if I can get one.
