my commercial 45 for the miracles song 'shop around' issued
as tamla 54034 lists a run time on the label as 2:48 but
actually runs 2:49....this 45 run time s/b added to the
because the run time ranges wildly from 2:43-2:49

An interesting twist on this was something I just learned tonight.

So Barry Gordy was unhappy with the first release Shop Around being played on Detroit radio. After two weeks of airplay, he decided to have Smokey re-record the song.
Good thing he did, because the second release is the one we all know well. At least all of us who grew up with Motown fully incorporated in the Top-40 of the 1960s.

Hoffman's site says the first version is included on the 35th Anniversary Collection, and also on the first volume of the Complete Motown Singles Box Set. I hadn't noticed!
So, now I am going to have to look this early release up soon.

"The Complete Motown Singles" has National Version and
Regional Version of "Shop Around," so maybe those are the
two mixes?

Yes, that sounds in-line with what I've read about the two versions.

And then there's the alternate take in 2-
track stereo on the Motown Karaoke cd, using
the same backing track as the hit version.

Yeah, Berry Gordy realized the first recorded version was a little too lagging in tempo. So they recut it with the speed of the rhythm
brought up a bit.
