I'm copying and pasting the following posts from another forum thread discussing deleted digital download Top 40 singles also that are also not available on CD. Since this topic is of interest to a number of us, it probably should have it's own dedicated thread:
JL328 wrote:
...There were a handful of American Idol songs and other live recordings that met the same fate. Here is a (perhaps incomplete) list with as much info as my memory can muster:
1) Across the Universe-- Various Artists (47th Grammys)
2) Cry Baby/Piece of My Heart-- Stone/Etheridge (47th Grammys)
3) The World I Know-- David Cook (Live Performance-- AI Top 2)
4) I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For-- David Cook (Live
Performance-- AI Top 2)
5) Dream Big-- David Cook (Live Performance-- AI Top 2)
6) Permanent (American Idol Charity Song)-- David Cook
The hit version is the live version titled "American Idol Charity Song." It
was only available for a limited time. It runs about 3:23 and (I believe) is a
live recording (I do not have it). This song was later released on his album
in a different 2:57 studio version. That album version was not the version
that charted Billboard.
7) Imagine-- David Archuleta (Live Performance-- AI Top 2)
8) I'll Stand By You (Idol Gives Back Performance)-- Carrie Underwood
This is a studio version. Runs approx. 3:32. It was played on AI over a
charity clip, released to iTunes for charity, then quickly pulled.
9) Praying For Time (Idol Gives Back Performance)-- Carrie Underwood
This is a live performance.
10) What About Now (Idol Gives Back Performance)-- Daughtry
This one is under the radar because people assume the album version as
the hit. It's not. The hit was the acoustic version that was played on
American Idol (Idol Gives Back). It is not a live version, but is a special
acoustic version (and therefore different than the album version). like "I'll
Stand By You," I think it was played on IGB over a montage a clips. The
acoustic version was released to iTunes, people bought it, and the song
charted Billboard the next week based on the IGB performance. I believe
the album version charted in a completely different year.
11) You Give Love a Bad Name (American Idol Performance)-- Blake Lewis
I believe a studio version.
12) We Belong Together (From "Tristan & Isolde")-- Gavin DeGraw
Another under the radar one. There is a 5:26 album version still available
on iTunes. This is not the hit. The hit runs 4:33. I honestly don't know
why this song is no longer available; it wasn't part of a live performance
and I don't think it was released for charity. I'm speculating a bit, but I
think this song got a lot of run due to its appearance in trailers for
"Tristan & Isolde" (or maybe One Tree Hill or Dawson's Creek or one of
those shows?) so the record company quickly released a version (which
became the hit version) then quickly pulled it when the album was
released? That's speculation, but the hit version is long gone in favor of
the longer and IMO not as good album version. I'd actually love to hear
the real story on this song.
13) Stranded (Haiti Mon Amour)-- Jay Z, et al.
This was from the Hope For Haiti Now special. There was a live version
and a studio version and I'm not sure which was the hit. Neither is
available any longer.
14) Hallelujah-- Justin Timberlake & Matt Morris feat. Charlie Sexton
If you've never heard this, you're missing out. Also from Hope For Haiti
Now, there was only one version. There is no crowd noise, but I'm not
entirely sure it's a studio recording. Runs 4:16 and was a top 40 hit for
one week. One of my favorite recordings.
15) Mad World (American Idol Performance)-- Adam Lambert
Studio Recording
16) Heartless (American Idol Performance)-- Kris Allen
Studio Recording
17?) Ain't No Sunshine (American Idol Performance)-- Kris Allen
Studio Recording. Throwing this one on here because I'm not sure. The
hit was a studio recording and a 2:13 studio recording was later released
on a five song EP called "American Idol Season 8: The 5 Song EP." Not
sure if that's the same version because I never bought the song when it
was released after AI.
I used to have a list of these, but damn if I can't find it. So, this is largely
pieced together from memory, so there may be others that I'm forgetting
(something from the CMAs perhaps?). |

18) All Summer Long-- Hit Masters
I also just realized that this pop culture anomaly is no longer available,
although the companion version by the "Rock Heroes" appears to still be
going strong on iTunes.
19) Home Sweet Home-- Carrie Underwood
Studio recording, played as the going home music during one of the
seasons of AI. Also appears to no longer be available.
Also, just a further note to point out that the version of "Heartless" on Kris
Allen's album is not the hit. The hit AI studio recording runs 4:02.

Thanks to JL328 for his useful list. Here's some additional random information about songs from his list:
2) Run time is (5:30).
6) This is indeed a live recording.
9) Run time is (3:37).
10) As JL328 states, this song made the top 40 based on the strength of download sales of the "Idol Gives Back Performance" version. When the album version started to get airplay several months later, the song re-entered the Hot 100 but did not make the Top 40 again. The deluxe edition of the Daughtry album (which I do not own) contains an acoustic version with the same run time as the 'Idol' version, so this may be the same version.
11) This is indeed a studio version. It runs (3:09).
13) As JL328 states, the digital-only Hope For Haiti Now album contained both studio and live versions of this song. Most download sales were of the studio version, which runs (4:18).
14) This was a live version, eventhough no audience noise is present. I don't quite recall, but it is possible the "Hope For Haiti Now" concert did not take place with an audience. I remember that the 9/11 benefit concert took place in a studio without an audience.
17) The American Idol Season 8 version is the same.
18) When Kid Rock's "All Summer Long" was a hit in 2008, he refused to make the track available digitally. Two cover versions, one by 'Rock Heroes' and one by 'Hit Masters' sold enough downloads to make the Top 40. The angry comments on iTunes indicate that almost all of these sales were to people who mistakenly believed they were buying the Kid Rock version. The Rock Heroes version runs (4:55). The Hit Masters version runs (3:47).

Judging from the iTunes preview, the acoustic version of "What About Now"
on the deluxe edition of the Daughtry album is indeed the Idol Gives Back
performance.
So, removing that and Kris Allen's "Ain't No Sunshine" from the list, we're
down to 17 lost hits (assuming I'm not missing any).

Ok. I found my notes on this topic and took one for the team and did a
little additional research, which included visiting American Idol fansites
and other places on the internet for information. As an aside, American
Idol fansites are some of the scariest places on the internet and I would
suggest they are not for the faint of the heart. Those people are
hardcore.
In any event, I find it fascinating that each of these songs--- each less
than 10 years old--- has so thoroughly disappeared from the universe
that there is very little information available and almost impossible to find
even an excerpt from many of these anywhere on the internet.
In addition to reading my notes, and foraging through AI message boards
for exact song titles, release dates, etc., I also reviewed every Top 40 song
since 2/12/2005 that has spent fewer than 8 weeks on the Hot 100 to see
if it is still available on iTunes. I did not, however, review the Glee songs-
- I assume those are all still available (or at least available on a cd).
The list of 17 (18, if you count "Stranded" twice) appears to be complete.
With that said, here is the list (again) of the dirty dozen (and a half) with
as much info as I have. Where the information was available to me (either
because I bought the songs or could figure it out via the internet), I've
given the exact titles as they appeared on iTunes...
I'll post this info a few at a time....
1) Across the Universe
Billboard Artist: Various Artists
iTunes Artist: Alicia Keys, Alison Krauss, Billie Joe Armstrong, Bono, Brian
Wilson, Norah Jones, Steven Tyler, Stevie Wonder, Tim McGraw & Velvet
Revolver
Peak Date: March 5, 2005
Peak: 22
Top 40 Weeks: 1
Hot 100 Weeks: 1
Time: 4:35
Event: Live recording from the 47th Grammy Awards. February 13, 2005.
Reason for Pull: Charity Single for victims of the Asian tsunami in
December 2004.
2) Cry Baby/Piece of My Heart
Melissa Etheridge & Joss Stone
Peak Date: April 2, 2005
Peak: 32
Top 40 Weeks: 1
Hot 100 Weeks: 2
Time: The time on the iTunes single was listed as 5:34. Paul indicates the
actual time is 5:30.
Event: Live recording from the 47th Grammy Awards. February 13, 2005.
Reason for Pull: Charity Single for Cancer Research Organizations City of
Hope and the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation. It was available
beginning March 15, 2005 and pulled after 30 days.
3) We Belong Together
Gavin DeGraw
Peak Date: February 4, 2006
Peak: 26
Top 40 Weeks: 2
Hot 100 Weeks: 3
Time: 4:33 (?)
Event: Studio Recording from the movie "Tristan & Isolde"
Reason for Pull: Unknown, but a different version was later released on his
album. There does appear to be a "Tristan & Isolde" OST, and I found
references claiming that this song is "from the soundtrack," but the track
listing on Amazon does not include it.
We Belong
Together- Gavin DeGraw
4) I'll Stand By You
Carrie Underwood
Peak Date: May 12, 2007
Peak: 6
Top 40 Weeks: 4
Hot 100 Weeks: 5
Time: 3:23
Event: Studio Recording from Idol Gives Back, Season 6, aired April 25,
2007.
Reason for Pull: Charity song for Idol Gives Back
5) You Give Love a Bad Name
Blake Lewis
Peak Date: June 9, 2007
Peak: 18
Top 40 Weeks: 2
Hot 100 Weeks: 4
Time: 3:08
Event: Studio recording of song performed at American Idol Finale, Season
6, May 23, 2007.
Reason for Pull: Unknown. This was available on a digital album called the
"Blake Lewis EP," which contained 5 studio versions of songs Lewis
performed on AI. The entire EP was pulled from iTunes and, to my
knowledge, is not available anywhere.
6) Praying For Time (Idol Gives Back Performance)
Carrie Underwood
Peak Date: April 26, 2008
Peak: 27
Top 40 Weeks: 1
Hot 100 Weeks: 2
Time: 3:38
Event: Live recording from Idol Gives Back, Season 7, April 9, 2008.
Reason for Pull: Charity song for Idol Gives Back
7) Dream Big (American Idol Performance)
David Cook
Peak Date: June 7, 2008
Peak: 15
Top 40 Weeks: 1
Hot 100 Weeks: 2
Time: 1:57 (?) (I don't have it)
Event: Live recording from finale of American Idol, Season 7. May 21,
2008.
Reason for Pull: Unknown
I think this may
be AN EDIT of the iTunes single version. Can anyone confirm?
8) I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For (American Idol Performance)
David Cook
Peak Date: June 7, 2008
Peak: 22
Top 40 Weeks: 1
Hot 100 Weeks: 2
Time: Judging by some online research, I think the iTunes track time
might have been 2:26 with an actual time of 2:21? (I don't have it)
Event: Live recording from finale of American Idol, Season 7. May 21,
2008.
Reason for Pull: Unknown
9) The World I Know (American Idol Performance)
David Cook
Peak Date: June 7, 2008
Peak: 28
Top 40 Weeks: 1
Hot 100 Weeks: 1
Time: Judging by some online research, I think the iTunes track time
might have been 2:19 with an actual time of 2:14 (?) (I don't have it)
Event: Live recording from finale of American Idol, Season 7. May 21,
2008.
Reason for Pull: Unknown
I think this may
be AN EDIT of the iTunes version. Can anyone confirm?
10) Imagine (American Idol Performance) [Top 2]
David Archuleta
Peak Date: June 7, 2008
Peak: 36
Top 40 Weeks: 1
Hot 100 Weeks: 1
Time: 2:09 (?) (I don't have it)
Event: Live recording from finale of American Idol, Season 7. May 21,
2008.
Reason for Pull: Unknown. The hit version was titled "Imagine (American
Idol Performance) [Top 2]" on iTunes because there was an earlier version
(running approximately 2:17) entitled "Imagine (American Idol
Performance)." That version was recorded during the Top 20 "Songs of
the 70s" week. That version is not the hit version.
11) All Summer Long
Hit Masters
Peak Date: September 6, 2008
Peak: 19
Top 40 Weeks: 2
Hot 100 Weeks: 5
Time: 3:49
Event: Karaoke version of the Kid Rock song, which was itself unavailable
on iTunes
Reason for Pull: Because it was awful? The best part of the track is the
guy doing the Bob Seger part. He brings it.
That's it through 2008.
*Edited to add or update timing info for Cry Baby/Piece of My Heart, I Still
Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, The World I Know and
I'll Stand by You.

Regarding this:
4) I'll Stand By You [Not sure how it was actually listed in iTunes]
Carrie Underwood
I bought this so I have a copy. The artwork for the single simply lists "American Idol", "Idol Gives Back", and "Carrie Underwood" but no song title is listed. The title is listed as "I'll Stand By You" in the notation of the mp3 file.

Top 40 Weeks: 1
Hot 100 Weeks: 3
Time: 3:38
Event: Studio recording of song used during American Idol, Season 8,
during each contestant's elimination.
Reason for Pull: Unknown.
13) Heartless (American Idol Studio Version)
Kris Allen
Peak Date: June 6, 2009

Hot 100 Weeks: 3
Time: 4:02
Event: Studio recording of song performed at American Idol Final 3,

version runs 4:02. The album version runs 3:42 and is not the same
recording.
14) Mad World (American Idol Studio Version)

Peak: 19
Top 40 Weeks: 1
Hot 100 Weeks: 3
Time: 3:04

8, May 20, 2009.
Reason for Pull: Unknown.

David Cook
Peak Date: June 6, 2009
Peak: 24
Top 40 Weeks: 1
Hot 100 Weeks: 2
Time: 3:23 (?)
Event: Live recording of song performed at American Idol Finale, Season 8,
May 20, 2009.
Reason for Pull: Charity song for ABC[Squared] (Accelerate Brain Cancer

still available but that is not the version that propelled the song onto the
chart.

That's it. I can't find any Top 40 hit after June 2010 that is unavailable.
All of "the Voice" recordings, the Taylor Swift charity single "Ronan," and
all of the Glee songs (as far as I can tell) are still available. If I'm missing
something, please let me know.

Well... at some point between when I last updated this list in June 2014
and now, the Rock Heroes' version of "All Summer Long" also went to that
great dustbin in the sky and seems to be no longer available anywhere.
So, for the sake of completeness, I'm updating this thread...
20) All Summer Long
The Rock Heroes
Peak Date: October 11, 2008
Peak: 29
Top 40 Weeks: 2
Hot 100 Weeks: 15
Time: 4:56
Event: Karaoke version of the Kid Rock song, which was itself unavailable
on iTunes
Reason for Pull: Remained available for 6 years before being pulled. The
song was never meant to be more than a karaoke version of a popular
song.
Good night, Rock Heroes.

Gavin DeGraw's "We Belong Together" can be crossed off this
list as it was issued in its original digital single
version on the "Finest Hour: The Best Of Gavin DeGraw" CD
back in 2014. Timing there is 4:30 but it contains several
seconds of silence at the end so it syncs up perfectly to
my original download.

The Stranded song is available on a rare CD issued by U2 to their fan club. I am pretty sure this is the single version, but have no way to confirm.

I take it Ronan is only available in lossy and not in lossless, correct?
The only other 2010-2018 hit I cannot find in lossless is Hallelujah by Justin Timberlake, Matt Morris and Sexton which was never released that way.
I'm not counting the Rockabye radio mix in this that has Anne-Marie and Clean Bandit without Sean Paul, since there appears no formal release of it.
I was able to obtain the Mike D Mix of Somebody I Used To Know which got airplay, but that is not an actual released single.
I am sure there are other songs outside the top 20 not available in lossless, but someone correct me if they found something else that was not available on CD or as a FLAC download.

I take it Ronan is only available in lossy and not in
lossless, correct?

Yeah, I have never been able to find "Ronan" in lossless
format. It was an iTunes exclusive.
It missed the Top 40, but Jennifer Lopez & Lin-Manuel
Miranda's charity single "Love Make the World Go Round"
was an iTunes exclusive as well, and I've never found
that in lossless format, either. There was a promo CD
single for it in the US, apparently, but I've never been
able to obtain one (I'll be you it's lossy, anyway).
A lot of these charity singles are iTunes exclusives.
It's maddening. So is the recent version of "Take Me
Home, Country Roads" by Copilot Music + Sound, that was
in the iTunes top ten for several days.

Brian W,
I've come to accept that this decade the CD single met its official death. You can't even find anything in the US released as a physical CD single since 2012 (I picked up Skyfall by Adele for 1.99 at Walmart then).
I miss being able to piece together the top 40 off of CD. This decade it went all digital.

What year was it that promo CD singles stopped being made and sent to radio stations? I'm hoping to find one from 2011 (by Kelly Rowland), something I only recently decided to really seek it in lossless, and I'm wondering if there's even a chance that a promo CD single would have been made in 2011 and sent to radio stations.

They were still sending out a handful of promo CDs in 2011, but they were mostly all CD-Rs by that point.

I actually prefer downloading singles to having CD singles... I just want lossless downloads.
