This just missed the Top 40 (#43 in 1993). I noticed the promo CD Single has both edited and full Top 40 and AC Mixes, with the full Top 40 Mix being the one that was used as the A-Side on commercial copies of the 45 and Cassette Single. So I have a few questions regarding these mixes:
Is it safe to assume that later pressings of the parent album, "Big Iron Horses", used the Top 40 mix?
If so, does anyone know if there are any major differences between the Original Album Version and Top 40 mix? (Or the AC Mixes).
If original pressings of the CD contain an original album version, is there any way to distinguish those copies from later copies with the hit mix?

Great song— I recall being disappointed when it didn’t cross over in a
big way. Regarding your question about whether the “original album
version” is different to the Top 40 mix: Yes and No. This single was
recorded and rush-released after the surprise pop success of their
previous single “When She Cries”, so it actually does not appear on
early pressings of the album at all. The later CD album version runs the
same length as the full Top 40 mix, so it’s probably safe to assume that
the album version is what they would have predicted the “hit” version to
be: the full Top 40 mix. Disclaimer: I don’t currently own either the
album or single to verify.

Thanks for that information. I just checked Discogs and I see what you mean - some copies of the CD and Cassette don't have the song at all. It looks like there was a song called "We're Gonna Be OK" that was scrapped on later copies of the album for "Tell Me What You Dream". You're probably right about the Full Top 40 mix being intended to be the "Hit" version, and therefore they put that on the album. I guess I was just assuming that the label of "Top 40 Mix" meant that there was a somewhat different mix on the album, like maybe less saxophone or something.
By the way, I love "When She Cries" and was surprised to find there weren't any other versions of the song released anywhere. I don't recall "Tell Me What You Dream" on the radio at all in 1993, but it was #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart, despite its low placement on the Pop Chart. I also didn't know that it was a cover of a Timothy B. Schmit song.

I did not know it was a cover either. We had an A/C station just down
the dial about .8 notches from our local Top 40 in the early nineties, so I
was lucky enough to catch this one on the air some in its day. I was too
young to really gauge the way the different formats worked so I was
always really impressed by that “the other pop station” played so many
songs that performed very middlingly on the Hot 100! Lol
