Brian W,
I've come to accept that this decade the CD single met
its official death. You can't even find anything in the
US released as a physical CD single since 2012 (I picked
up Skyfall by Adele for 1.99 at Walmart then).
I miss being able to piece together the top 40 off of CD.
This decade it went all digital.

There were a few CD singles released since 2012, although
I don't have any info on any since 2016.
We have a thread here that documents them pretty well.
I'll bump it up for you.

Paul,
I saw the thread. Was just noticing how the physical CD single is all but dead. I'm more upset that Itunes will never offer any of its promo Idol downloads again, leaving my collection missing them since I came in a little late.

They were still sending out a handful of promo CDs in 2011, but they were mostly all CD-Rs by that point. |

Well, as long as there was a physical product being made then (whether promo CDs or simply CD-Rs), there's at least a chance I'll be able to track down a lossless CD of this Kelly Rowland songs on ebay or elsewhere at some point.

I posted this in another thread, in case you missed it:

You might be shocked to know that hundreds of big hits
have been serviced to radio only as lossy files over the years. By the
early 2000s, the internet was much faster and everyone owned a CD
burner. Record company promotions departments were sometimes
given the task of "pressing up" promo copies to send to radio stations.
They used whatever source they had, which sometimes was just an
mp3. The disc would then be sent to the music service companies, like
TM, and they would rip the disc as a wav file, but it's too late. The disc
was already burned using an mp3. |

Wow, I'm shocked that it's hundreds of big hits that are lossy. But I'm sure you're right. I just was checking a single version of a non-hit from 2006. I had it lossy (orig from a TM Century Disc). So I bought the commercially available CD single from UK, the only place it came out. It just arrived today. It, too, was lossy. So I checked my CD album to see if I could edit to be the single version. The CD album was a lossy, too! And this was 2006. I want to (but kind of don't want to) inspect all my WAV files from the 2000's in Adobe to see just how many of my files are really lossless. But I'm afraid to check into this :) (Of course, I'd do it with the hope that whatever lossy files I discover are actually on my CDs or HitDiscs, I can find lossless files elsewhere - which has actually happened sometimes.)

It's crazy how many songs have been compressed to MP3 before being
put on promo CD. That doesn't necessarily mean every source is lossy,
though. I've found lossless copies of songs on full-length CDs that were
lossy on the promo CDs. It's a case by case basis, and it seemed to be
really bad from around the mid-2000s until at least the beginning of the
2010s. Lately, I haven't really done much checking to see which newer
hits are lossy.

I'm starting from 2018 and will go back to 2000. I'm on 2016. I've found
some lossy files (and some questionable lossy ones) including 2 lossy
files from HitDiscs that were lossless on the artist's CDs. But I am
finding all sorts of odd combinations. For example, a song will be Lossy
on the CD album but not CD single, and vice versa. Some are Lossy on
a CD but not on 7digital. Weird stuff

Update: I also just found a song I took off the band Safetysuit's CD (from 2012) that's lossy. It also exists on 2 HitDiscs, HA201206 and HP201206. Does anyone have these? And if not, do you think it's even worth bothering for me to track down those HitDiscs when the artist's CD itself contains this song as a lossy file?

I've now researched all my songs I've gotten from HitDiscs and artists' CDs (and anthologized) from 2000-2018 and found a lot of lossy ones as well. Many of the HitDiscs songs I also had on the artists's CDs. I haven't checked yet but I'm hoping they're the same mix, so hopefully I could use those. Or I bought them on 7Digital, where luckily they were lossless. But now there are still a new handful of lossy songs that I'll probably only be able to have as lossy.
But Aaron was right. I was shocked at some of the lossy songs supplied HitDiscs that became big hits. These in particular really surprised me - that lossless were sent to TM Century (and perhaps that way on all promo CDs sent to radio):
Honey, I'm Good - Andy Grammer
Let Me Love You - DJ Snake ft. Justin Bieber
7 Years - Lukas Graham
Bad Blood - Taylor Swift (solo)
Those were all huge!
I know the quality gets lost in radio anyway (due to compression and other factors), but still, you'd think the labels would want to supply the best quality sources for songs they hope will become hits.

In my researching the 2000-2018 songs in my collection, I found the oldest "lossy" song was from 2003. Has anyone come across any that are older? For me, it was the TLC song/single "Damaged", which I actually only have on the album - surprised it would be lossy there. I ordered the CD single which contains the "radio mix", so I'm hoping that won't be lossy, since it was presumably a whole new mix done during another session (although it could really mean 'radio edit' and still be lossy.)

19) Home Sweet Home-- Carrie Underwood
Studio recording, played as the going home music during one of the
seasons of AI.
On the Deluxe Version of Play On it is an import, an Australian release. Added as a bonus track.
Track 7 on CD 2
