All three of the edit/promo versions I've heard are straight edits of the LP version. None have any part of the "Dub" tacked onto it.

I'm unaware of this extended version appearing on CD, but if you had the dub version it sounds like it would be easy to tag it onto the end of the album version.
EDIT: I just found a rip that doesn't completely break down and re-start like the YouTube video... it runs about 7:20 instead of 8:01... I don't know the source, but now I'm wondering if there were two "runs" of this mash-up, or if whoever ripped this vinyl "cleaned up" the transition. (The cut is pretty obvious, at 3:42 on the album version, jumping right back into "do you really want..." on the dub version.)

My Canadian stock 45-rpm has that very dub version (cut # 2) on the flipside. The part of that version that is akin to the LP has a noticeably attenuated upper midrange. But that is the cut I also have. The "A" side is the complete LP version.
I had mentioned a version that used the beginning "thumps" on the dub mix, tacked on the start of the LP version where the percussion kicks in. CKOC in Hamilton played it in 1983. I assume it was a custom hack job, no?

The 'dub version' on the youtube link is basically the album version followed by the dub as one continuous track. Interestingly, the Blank & Jones series so80s released a culture club collection, and Blank and Jones did re-edits of both Do You Really Want to Hurt Me AND Time, creating 'extended' mixes, using the instrumental/dub versions from the b-sides, creating tracks that run about a minute longer than the album versions. For Do You Really Want to Hurt Me, the used the "Captain Crucial" rap ending from the dub, rather than the boy george vocal ending. Pretty interesting alternative mixes for fans.

In my original post, I stated there is a 3:33 commercial 45, which is
apparently pretty rare. There is an eBay seller who has a picture of this 45 in
a Buy It Now listing. If you are interested in buying one, he has 4 copies of
the 45; however, it would be wise to check if all of his copies are the 3:33
version (or if he even still has a 3:33 copy).

Does anybody remember playing either the 3:10 or 2:51 edits on the radio, or remember hearing a station play either edit?
The 3:34 sounds like what was played around here, but I typically play the shortest DJ edit available on BlackLight Radio... I'm having a hard time talking myself into further slicing and dicing on this one.
What do you remember?

Gene, our station started out adding the (3:10) promo 45 version in 1983,
and we stayed with it that length for its full chart run; it obviously did very
well for us. We thought back then that removing the entire opening
segment, which the (2:51) version did, was just too extreme, and changed
the overall feel of the song too much. I don't recall hearing the (2:51) edit
on radio much at all back then, but I do recall hearing the various longer
versions on other Top 40 stations.
Looking back, I think we made the right choice, as to the version. But, as
it the case so often, I believe that personal preference comes from
whatever version you happen to have heard most, and gotten used to, at
the time. In other words, it's very subjective, and based on each
individual's personal memories - with no real "right" or "wrong" answer.

Thanks for the response, Jim... and I'm with you: knocking off the entire intro never seemed right.
I've had it through my head I used to hear the full intro, but I'm doubting myself now... and a friend on Facebook just confirmed she used to hear the 3:10 edit in Little Rock, so looks like it's about time to take the razor blade and laundry marker to Culture Club again. :-)

Just the opposite up my way. Almost everyone (including
where I worked) played the 2:51 version. WHTT in Boston
played the album version, but edited the intro so it was
like the 2:51 edit. That's the version that ended up on
TM GoldDiscs (or at least the one I have the song on).
I'm not sure of the purpose of the 3:10 edit, the edit
sounds clunky and abrupt. Only ever heard that one on
the air once or twice on a soft AC.

To answer this 8 year old question, yes. I have 4 copies
of this single...a stock 3:33, a promo 3:33, a stock 4:23
and a promo 2:51/3:10. I wasn't aware that the 3:33
version was rare.

Hykker, thank you for confirming I'm not crazy! That 3:33 edit is my favorite
of all the various edits, and I'm glad someone else has it on a stock copy.

Although Pat DOES have all three later editions/re-issues of this song's original parent album, 1982's Kissing to Be Clever, currently listed in the on-line database (Virgin 91390 & 86179 & 92404), I noticed that he's actually missing the original (and rarest) U.S. version, which came out circa 1984-85, on Virgin/Epic EK 38398. Photos on Discogs: CULTURE CLUB - "Kissing to Be Clever" (U.S. CD) Of course, in addition to "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me", the CD also featured two other top 40 hits, "Time (Clock of the Heart)" and "I'll Tumble 4 Ya", so Virgin/Epic 38398 will also need to be added under the listings for those songs as well...

So from what I can see, the 3:10 version halves the soft intro. Is that correct? If that's the case, I've never EVER heard that version anywhere. Interesting though.

I hope this won't add to the confusion
here, but I seem to recall a version on
the radio that was basically the same as
the album version, but cut out the lines
"I have danced inside your eyes, how can I
be real". I don't recall anything else
being cut from it, so it wouldn't be the
3:10 or 2:51 versions that were already
mentioned. Does anyone else recall hearing
the song with just those two lines cut? I
suppose if it's not on any official promo,
it may have just been an in-house edit
from the station(s) I heard it on.

Im only aware of the three mentioned here. We played the 3:33 version in Albany
which I believe was the first promo. Then a second promo came in that was 3:10 on
both sides (labeled specially edited intro) Then finally we got one that was 3:10 on one side and 2:51 on
the other. (labeled no intro) I figured the next week we'd get a 2:30 one!

That's interesting, Bill. I don't think I've ever come across a copy that had the 3:10 on both sides. I do, however, have the 3:33 (both sides) and 2:51/3:10 configuration promos.
