the commercial 45 contains the "special mix" on the A-side and runs 4:48 NOT 4:44 as stated on the 45's label......

We covered this several months ago in another thread, Ed. That 4:48 remix is very similar, but not identical to, the Special Mix. It's closer than the album version is, though:

Was the "special mix" of "Keeping the Faith" the ONLY version that was available on commercial and dj 45s? I'm curious as to whether there were also 45s that had the LP mix or were all the superior "special mix"?

I recorded a bunch needle drops over the weekend from mint/never been played before vinyl on tracks are are unavailable or very hard to get on CD. "Keeping the Faith" definitely falls under this category. I have two questions about this 45:
1) Has anyone noticed that the 45 sounds somewhat muddy?
2) Did the 45 version ever get played on the radio? I don't remember ever hearing that remix and even the video uses the album version.
Thanks.

never heard the 7" remix here in NY back in the day. Radio always played the album mix.

I know I played the remix on the air in Albany at WTRY. I always felt that the reason they remixed it was because it was the SIXTH single off the "An Innocent Man" album, so they wanted to freshen it up for radio. To make something new out of an almost year old track.

Most of the time I don't touch the EQ on my vinyl transfers; however, this is one where I punched up the lows and highs. It just sounded too thin and flat without making any adjustments. Also, I took mine from a vinyl re-issue 45 rather than the original styrene stock copy.
I was in Columbus, OH, at the time it was a hit, and although I don't recall the station, I seem to recall it was the 7" remix.

Remix here in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I remember getting the album and being totally confused trying to figure out what was "wrong" with the album version. :)

My US 12" promo of Keeping the Faith is labeled "Special Mix" and runs 5:22. This is the version I heard on the radio at the time (I recorded it on casette so I can say this for certain). Is the 5:22 version simply a longer version of the "Special Mix" on the 45?

No, the 12" mix is not simply a longer version of the 7" special mix. The "Special Mix" on the 7" 45 adds a lot of instrumentation not on the LP mix, and then the 12" mix adds even more than what's on the 7" remix. The 7" remix is closer in sound to the 12" mix than it is to the LP mix, which has far less instrumentation. The 12" mix is also a bit longer than the others (I don't recall exactly but probably under 20 seconds.)
I faded the 12" mix (from an official CD release) to be the same length as the 7", plus I also took a cleaned vinyl copy of the 7" special remix (supplied by MMathews, and never available on CD) and did some more cleaning, etc., to make it really close to CD quality, and it's those 2 versions that I use for my collection (i.e. what I listen to). I don't really care for the album mix, after having been made aware of these 2 mixes. The 12" mix is available on CD (a BJ boxed set). The 7" special mix is not, but I've been speaking to a contact at Sony about trying to get this put out on CD someday. So at least they are aware that it exists and has never been released on CD.

It was documented in another thread that the Billy Joel box set is labeled as 12" Remix, but it's really a different, previously unreleased remix that is close to (but not identical to) the 12" version.

Is this a case where a core artist like Billy Joel would dictate what's released and what's not?

I just read that thread about "Keeping the Faith" 12" version in the "Piano Man" thread. So I guess I've never heard the real 12" version - I've heard the 7" special remix and the neo-12" version. (I guess they call it the 12" version on the box set.) And the real 12" version apparently is longer than the version on the boxed set. But how does it differ from that, mix-wise? Can anyone send a link to the real 12" mix and also give a synopsis of the differences?

Is the Dance Remix on iTunes the same version as the 45 Special Mix?

Unfortunately, no, it's the alternate mix from the box set. I was able to hear the 12" promo 'Special Mix,' though, and it is very similar to the 45 version. The most notable differences compared to the 7" 'Special Mix' are the intro, bridge, and last verse. The rest of the 12" is pretty much identical to the 45.

I'm guessing the Special Mix never made it to CD, correct? Aaron do you have a good dub of this track?
