My promo 45 has a listed and actual (4:24) "Short Version" on one side, and a listed and actual (5:27) "Long Version" on the other side. Since the LP version is just (4:36), it begs the question: Would someone happen to have a 12" single on this - I recall there was one - perhaps that's what's masquerading as the "Long Version" on my promo 45?

Yeah Jim,

I own the USA promo 12" Portrait RAS 2219 and it's pretty much just a higher quality pressing of the 45 [with the "(short version)" backed by the "(long version)].

The LP version is an edit of the "(long version)".

I do not believe there was a commercial domestic pressing of this song on a 12" single.

Thanks, Andy. You sure don't see many "non-disco mixes" have your statement made about them.

Jim I also own a copy of the 12" for "The Sweetest Taboo". It's a UK pressing on Epic with the catalog number TA6609. The main difference between the LP and 12" versions is the 12" has a longer intro and instrumental break than the LP version. The import also has the album track "You're Not The Man" on the B-side.

Andy, I just took a careful listen to the "Long Version" on that promo 12" record. The LP version actually isn't edited from that version, although the two mixes are very similar. On the promo 12" version, there is a wood block instrument (I guess that's what you'd call it) appearing on the intro that is not on the LP version. There may be other differences, too, but that one struck me right away.

Wow,

I just pulled out all my versions and Aaron, you're absolutely right. Surprisingly I never noticed that additional percussion click before!

Thank you,

Andy

Currently, the database states the following comment for Sade's "The Sweetest Taboo":

(dj copies of this 45 run (4:24) the "short version" and (5:27) the "long version")

Just wanted to add that abagon reports the actual commercial 45 run time is 4:22. (The printed record label time is 4:24 just like on Jim's promo 45.)

I've been trying to determine whether the commercial 45 and LP versions differ only in length, as the database states, or whether the 45 is a slight edit of the LP version.

The two seem identical at least up to the point the main vocals end at about (3:45). (Pinpointing exact time points is a bit tricky for this one, since the song slowly fades in.) At about (3:57) on both versions, "angelic" voices are briefly heard in the centre of the stereo spectrum. On the 45, the rain sound effects then fade in at about (4:06). On the LP version, however, the angelic voices are heard again at about (4:07) before the rain sound effects fade in.

Does anybody else hear what I hear or do I need to get my hearing checked?

I should mention that my commercial 45 is a Canadian pressing, but if there is indeed such a slight edit, I doubt very much that the US commercial 45 would be different. (Although the US and Canadian commercial 45s of "Smooth Operator" do differ, as the latter is the same as the US dj 45.)

Nice discovery, Paul! Unfortunately, I can't verify it, since I don't have the LP length/version at all.

To echo what Paul C. mentioned, I compared 2 files I have of the song and I do detect the difference he mentioned.

In addition, the rain sfx seem to be a bit louder on the 45 version.

I echo. Thank you Paul C! I also verified between the US commercial 45 with the CD "Promise" US release. This song must be indicated as "version"on the data base. Because the start of the LP version is about :01 longer than the 45. And the fadeout ending of the 45 has the stormy and rainy sounds. However there are not the sounds at 4:20 around on the LP track. We can probably make the 45 version from the LP with the editing software.

Pat:
This run time info is indicated "commercial copies of this 45 run (4:24)". Actually, the running time is (4:22) while the listed time is "4:24" on the record label. Could you correct the run time info?

Just FYI, the described 'Short Version' is what I'm hearing
on my copy of The Ultimate Collection (Epic 88697904542).
