I don't have the answer, but I'm curious if someone here does:
What top 40 recording has the fastest fade?
I'm not counting cold or cold / fade endings, but actual fades with the band continuing to play.
I know some fade down in a matter of a few seconds, so this should be interesting!

The first one that springs to mind narrowly missed the top 40 in 1979 - "Girls Talk" by Dave Edmunds.
I'm sure there are some '60s-era songs that fade abruptly. Looking forward to seeing what others post in this thread!

I don't know if this counts, but the short version on the
promo 45 of "La Bamba" by Los Lobos just dumps out before
the accoustic part at the end.
There is a short version with an actual cold ending around
(I thought I had it on a TM GoldDisc, but it turned out to
have an incorrect time and had the full version), but
that's not what was on the promo.

The short version of "La Bamba" with the "actual" cold ending was created by TM Century, as far as I know. Rather than doing a quick fade, they added reverb to the last few notes just before the acoustic guitar solo.

Didn't Tuesday Afternoon by the Moody Blues fade really
fast on the 45?

Not top 40, but the 1967 mono Atco 45 of Buffalo Springfield's "Bluebird" falls off a cliff: a whopping 1.6 seconds from full volume to total gonner.
