Does anyone know how to recreate the 3:15 DJ edit of "I
Want You" from Marvin Gaye?

John, as memory serves me, the 3:15 promo 45 version is a slightly different mix than the LP version.

The 3:35 DJ edit is definitely a different mix than the
3:53 45 version.

So, would the 3:15 edit be an early fade of the 3:35
version or an edit of the 3:35 version?

Oh! That may have been what I was thinking. Let me dig through my
library to see what I have for the 3:15 version.

Thanks for jogging my memory, John. The 3:15 promo 45 version is not the same mix as the 3:35 promo 45 version. I created the edit many years ago (which I just uploaded for you), and I do not recall if I started with the stock 45 version or the LP version. Giving all of the various versions a quick listen, though, it sounds like the same mix is used for the LP, stock 45, and 3:15 promo 45. The only mix that is unique is the 3:35 promo, like you mentioned.

The version I have in my folder times out at 3:55.
Which version do I have? I'm thinking LP, maybe.

The version of this song on the LP runs 4:32 while the 45 edit runs 3:53, so the version you have Gary is the commercial hit 45.

Thanks for clearing that up! Also just downloaded the
promo 3:38 of I Want You, and it is a different mix in
many places. Kinda surprising from Motown that late
date. So does the 3:15 radio edit come from the
commercial 45 then?

The promo 45 is on "I Want You" CD extended edition. It
is different mix in several places. I also Have the LP
and commercial single cuts also.
I'm not sure if you can edit the promo single from the
LP version. It sounds different in a few places from
both commercial single and LP version.
I can send it to if you want.

The promo 45 version on the deluxe "I Want You" CD is a vinyl dub. It's a really good vinyl dub, though, and it has been cleaned up.
