I think I've uncovered a difference in length between the 45 and LP of the Eurythmics' "Here Comes the Rain Again". The database states that commercial 45 copies of this song run 5:05, yet the song is shown with a run time of 4:53 on the parent LP/CD Touch (RCA 4917). Although I don't have that particular CD, I do have the 3-CD various artist set Hits of the 80's (Columbia River Entertainment Group 310001) where the song runs 4:52 and fades out :13 sooner than the 45 length. Assuming this early faded version is what appears on the Eurythmics' Touch CD, it might not be a bad idea to note which discs in the database contain the (45 length) and (LP length).

Regarding the Eurythmics's "Here Comes the Rain Again", the database currently states that commercial copies are all 5:05. This must be based on the time stated on the record label because abagon reports the actual run time at 5:03. I know this is just another instance of a nominal two second difference, but the 5:03 time seems to be more in line with most of the song's database CD appearances containing the "45 length" comment.

It's been brought to my attention that the correct actual commercial 45 run time of "Here Comes the Rain Again" is 5:07. The time I reported in my previous post is incorrect. This now means all database CD appearances containing a "45 length" comment all run at least :03 shorter than the commercial 45.

Would this be a result of the 45 version being sourced from the 1991 Eurythmics Greatest Hits master? I've noticed most if not all songs featured fade two to five seconds early.

I'll have to check, but I'm pretty sure that CD uses the short radio edit of HCTRA.

According to the database, the short radio edit of "Here Comes the Rain Again" running 3:50 has not yet appeared on CD. But, Hykker, let us know if your Eurythmics Greatest Hits does have the edit because it's always possible there could have been two different CD pressings.

Could've sworn my GH disc had the edit, but it's the long version.
This CD DOES have the short version of "Who's That Girl". Not sure which version was on the stock 45, all I've ever seen were promos.

The Touch and Greatest Hits masters are approximately the same length, but each fade at a different pace.

The fade on Touch is loooong and begins its descent much earlier than on Greatest Hits, which maintains full volume until much closer to the conclusion of the song.

The short edit can be closely recreated by using Greatest Hits (the volume has not yet decreased at the edit point) but not by using the version found on Touch (there is a dramatic plunge in volume if the same edit is attempted.)

I've seen the louder fade referred to as the 12" version, though I don't own the actual 12" single. This could be the case as the 12" version of "Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)" was used on Greatest Hits.

To me, the last edit sounds like it's on "the rain..." at 3:38 (on the upbeat) and the pick up point would be 4:39. It sounds like a close approximation to me. Then at the beginning, cut from :19 to :34 to reduce the intro to 8 measures.

Wow... been so long since I've heard this version, that edit at the beginning sounds abrupt to me.

I ended up with a file 3:49 in length; do I understand correctly from the above posts that, sourcing from a CD, this is about as close as we can get to the original 45 length?

Just reporting that the version on RCA's '80s-era Touch CD fades from 4:23 to 4:53, and the version on Arista's 1991 Greatest Hits CD fades from 4:49 to 5:03. Same mix, different length.

There are a bunch of compilations that all use the same analog transfer as GH:
  • Time-Life's Sounds Of The Eighties Vol. 27 Rolling Stone 1983-1985 (1995; digitally exactly 0.1 dB quieter)
  • Warner Special Products' 2-CD Punk (1996; how exactly are the Eurythmics punk?)
  • Sony Germany's 2-CD Pop And Wave Vol. 7 (1997; differently EQ'd digital clone, with early fade from 4:51 to 4:55)
  • Time-Life's 2-CD Body Talk Vol. 21 Hearts On Fire (2000; digitally exactly 1.1 dB quieter)
  • Time-Life's 2-CD Modern Rock Vol. 9 Mid-'80s (2000; digitally exactly 1.5 dB quieter)
  • Time-Life's 2-CD Modern Rock Vol. 21 Club '80s (2001; differently EQ'd digital clone)
All of the above have a tiny but real amount of tempo drift, from 126.4 BPM at the beginning to 126.6 BPM at the end. You won't notice.

I distinctly remember that when this song came out, because 12" mixes and extended versions were all the rage, a display of the 7" at the checkout counter of my local Record World bragged that it was the "long version!", --which is kind of odd since it could easily have affected sales of the 12" single, which ran the same length. Not quite sure what the marketing plan was behind releasing a "long version" that was only like 10 seconds longer than the album version.

I tired to recreate the 45 version using the Greatest Hits album. The ending to
the 45 is different to the lp version. So it can't be recreated. I came close but
the ending of Annie say Hey Yeah twice with an instrumental fade is not on the
original lp.

The longer 45 version is only on the US edition of Greatest Hits (14 tracks). The international editions (with 18 tracks) have the shorter album version instead.
