Man In The Mirror IS a remix on the '45 and CD singles. If you listen to the
album version at 4:30 there's a "kiss" noise that's not present on the single
mix. The version on Number Ones is an edit of the ALBUM version. It has
that little noise at the 4:30 mark.

Curses, another 45 version to track down. The CD3 appears to be pretty rare at this point. Perhaps the 12" single has the 45 mix, as a source for a high quality needledrop.

I hear ya, Roscoe. Think I got lucky as I ordered a NM vinyl 45 for $7.99 w/shipping. Many sellers want a starting rate of $30.00 or more for Michael Jackson product.

Great find, Nick! Though I'd describe it more as a "tick" or a faint "click" than a "kiss." It's either "mouth noise" or him brushing up against the mic or some other background noise, or some sort of recording or mastering anomaly.

In all fairness, it shouldn't be a surprise -- the promo does describe it as "Single Mix" and does say "Remixed by Bruce Swedien."

Hmm... I'm trying to scope out the different versions of "King of Pop" worldwide... maybe one of them has the true 45 version.

I'll be damned... doesn't look like it's been issued anywhere except on Number Ones and the original CD singles. I'm really surprised there was no "Visionary" DualDisc for "Man in the Mirror," but there wasn't. Most of those had the correct single versions.

I got the US 3" CD single today and it has great sound – EQ'd nicely. Didn't
take long to do a remaster so I can use it in comps with other remastered
stuff.

Brian, my US 45 single of "Thriller" does not say
"Remixed Short Version" on it. It is listed as 3:56.

The LP version of "Rock With You" was remixed sometime
between the first and second pressings of the original LP
in 1979. The CBS Mastersound LP of "Off The Wall"
contained the remixed version. I agree, it sounds much
dreamier and laid back.

I know it's not labeled on the U.S. version, but the same version on the UK 12-inch is called "Remixed Short Version":

Brian, I've been forgetting to post this, but on the Visionary Single for
Remember The Time the lead track isn't the main version as it's generally
referred to. It's a slight remix like the 12" Main Mix. Does anyone know if
this is a '45 version or if it's appeared on any other CDs? Anyone interested
to compare I can send the track off the single.

Finally received this today, and Nick is correct: this is a previously-unissued mix of "Remember the Time," similiar to the "New Jack Jazz" or "Main Mix."

It starts out with the same three synth notes as the album version, but then there's a big "Whoo!" from Michael, and male background singers start scatting "Ba da da da da da, ba da da da da da," which continues all through the song. Other than the additional background vocals, it's very similar to the LP mix, but it's a bit sparser sounding.

I also recieved the DualDisc of "Smooth Criminal," and it does contain the 45 version, complete with breathing at the beginning. This is the only the third time the 45 version has been commercially issued on CD, after the original Japanese CD3 and the UK Tour Souvenir Pack, both out of print.

I believe the Remember The Time mix on Visionary is called the 7" Main Mix (what I assumed when I first heard it). On an acetate CD from Teddy Riley it lists a 7" mix along with the 12" mix (12" Main Mix), acapella, etc. You can see the info here: http://www.mjcollectorland.com/rileyacetate.htm. Unfortunately it's all in French, but track listings are all in English.

Man In The Mirror:

so Number Ones is a fake edit..

the album length versions of Man In The Mirror on.. Michael Jackson Essential and King Of Pop do not contain the click.. so are we labelling these an album length alternate version?

Oh, I don't need it for myself -- I've got everything that's on there from the original promo and commerical CD singles. I was just curious if it was commercially available currently.

2004's four CD box set The Ultimate Collection also has the album length Man In The Mirror 'without' the tick noise at 4:30.. i believe this was the first time it appeared, as i can't find another album length version without it before that.

I wonder if it's the full version of the single mix then. Could be since You
Are Not Alone and On The Line are in long form on there as well.

Scream – The inevitable duet between Michael and his sister Janet received a lukewarm reception at radio, but sales of over a million copies allowed a top five placing on the Hot 100. Both a two-track CD single and a maxi CD single were released. The two-track CD (UPC 0 9870-78000-2 3) and cassette singles featured the censored LP version of the song, running the same 4:38, but with one difference – the line “Stop f**kin' with me” at 2:51 on the LP version has been replaced with “Stop pressurin' me.”

if this really was the US single [i recall hearing a simple mechanical screech noise bleeping out the "F" word on the UK single] then it appears on the new Janet compilation Number Ones [UK - The Best]..

in fact i recall all the "clean" versions of Scream having the mechanical noise bleeping out the "F".. this version is entirely new to me.

doh!.. i just realised
the version on the JJ comp can't be the 45 as it times out at 4:02.. so ummmmm is this a new edit perhaps?
