I just picked up the CD "The Songmakers Collection" and noticed that "Beyond The Sea" runs slower. I also notice that is a bit longer on some other CDs, including "That's All" (where it originally appeared on LP in 1959).
So, my question, what is the true, proper speed of this? Both stereo LP and mono 45. Pat, you'd know this I figure! thanks!

David, the 45 states (2:48) and runs (2:48) and yes the version on "The Songmakers Collection" does run slow. I do not have the album that included this song so I cannot comment on the running time or speed of the LP.

would that mean then that all 2:52 or thereabouts versions of the song run slow? I also have "Ultimate", and it is slow there. Does anyone have the stereo "That's All" LP to confirm? Perhaps the CD of "That's All" is indeed an indication of the original stereo LP and a slower speed?

I'm not sure if this is what you're asking, but the That's All CD version runs 2:52.

I think what David's asking is whether the vinyl LP version runs (2:52).
Unfortunately, I can't help with that.

The Best of Darin Volume 2 cd has the mono Beyond The Sea and it runs 2:51. The version on the mono Atco Bobby Darin Story LP runs 2:54, though the fade is nearly inaudible the last couple seconds. So I'd have to think the hit mono mix was, indeed, 2:52.
GM
P.S. Yes, I timed the song on the album using the music under Darin's voiceover introduction.

Gary,
the timing on "Mack The Knife The Best Of Volume Two" that I have is 2:48. It is mono and it runs faster than the stereo versions that I have that run 2:52. Joel Whitburn's Pop Annual states the 45 timing as 2:48 as well.
So, we have a mystery....

had to bring this to the top again. I'm surprised the speed issue on "Beyond the Sea" didn't get resolved. Pat, you usually indicate speed differences in your database.
To add to this, "Queen Of The Hop" also runs at two different speeds (the mono being faster than the stereo). My Pop Annual lists the 45 time as 2:08, and all mono versions are a few seconds shorter.
So, for these two songs, does anyone know if the 45s were faster than their stereo LP counterparts? Or are these faster mono versions as a result of recent CD mastering?
thanks!

my commercial 45 issued as atco 6158 lists a run time of
2:48 and does indeed run that length.....the mono version
on 'the hit singles collection' (rhino 78326) is identical
to my vinyl 45....my stereo version runs 2:52 and is slower
than the mono version...

A newer collection on the Rhino label, 2016 has this listed as "La Mer (Beyond The Sea)."
Best I can tell is this is also a 2:52 length, though maybe even a second or two longer?
I know from reading discussions about Rhino, they aren't quite the company they once were. This 2016 compilation is called "Simply Sixties."
It's a 4 CD set which also goes under the label Unionsquaremusic. I have a feeling it may also be an import. Many tracks appear to be Re-recorded.
I know this is an ancient thread, but it's the closest thing I found regarding this track.
