Just noticed that the version of this song on "Her GH" is not the 45 version. It has a different ending. Starting at 3:47, the 45 lyric is "...baby, ohhh baby..." the CD version skips to "please...I need your love." The 45 and the CD version both run 4:14, though, so I am guessing that both the 4:23 versions contain the missing lines. I've tied to make a 45 edit from this, but the "baby" is MIA. Educated guess is that the 4:13 CD versions are attempts at the 45 version, and that the 4:23 versions are the LP or complete version from which the 45 edit was made. Who can help?

There is a radio edit of this song, I don't have my copy handy but I'll compare it with the stock single to see what the difference is. Off the top of my head, the promo edit runs around 3:25 or so.
Not that this answers your question, but sometimes promo edits were more complex than just a short version of the stock 45.

This is a very confusing issue as every cd in the database has the "please...I need your love" lyric. Both my dj 45 and mono "Soulful" vinyl LP run (4:13) and feature the "baby, oh baby" lyric. So does anyone have a stereo copy of the "Soulful" vinyl LP that can verify the actual running time and the fact that it contains the "please...I need your love" lyric?

Looks like the commercial 45 and stereo LP versions have close to the same actual run times. Is it safe to say the 45 version and stereo LP versions are two different edits and/or recordings thanks to the different endings?

Yes that is correct. The mono 45 version has yet to appear on CD in the U.S. anyway.

I've compared my US commercial 45, the version on the recently released The Complete 1960s Singles Plus (the PBS pledge drive release discussed in another thread), and a stereo download I purchased several years ago from the Soulful album. The version on the PBS set is the correct 45 version except that it is two seconds shorter.
