The soundtrack is listed on Amazon, but only available used on the marketplace, where it is being sold from 70 dollars and up. I wish they'd reissue the CD, because I only have a really poor condition used vinyl copy I found once.

You're correct, edtop40 - that most likely WAS a U.S.
pressing of the "American Anthem" soundtrack that you had
on CD. While I've never owned the CD myself (have the
cassette version), my old "Schwann" catalogs from the
late '80s do indeed show that it was issued on CD
domestically - Atlantic 81661-2, to be exact...

It looks like two mixes were released to radio:
1) The soundtrack mix, which runs about 4:23.
2) The "rock mix," which runs about 4:17.
Does anybody know if it was the album version, or if it was the "rock mix," that was considered the hit version?

All I see in Discogs is vinyl.
EDIT: I should clarify that there is a 12" promo here that indicates it is the LP version, and another 12" promo here that claims to be the rock mix.
Pictures of both 12" promos indicate they are for "AOR" stations on the record sleeve.
The only 7" promo listed on Discogs, here, has the LP version.

Pat, yes, Gene is correct that "Take It Easy" was only serviced on vinyl for singles. For the most part, the era of promo CD singles didn't start until 1987. For songs that charted on the Hot 100, the exceptions are:
"Dreamtime" by Daryl Hall
"Don't Stand So Close To Me '86" by the Police
"(Forever) Live And Die" by OMD
"Like No Other Night" by .38 Special
All of the above are from 1986. Aside from those four songs, I haven't been able to locate promo CD singles for any other 1986 Hot 100 charting songs.

Can I assume the soundtrack CD is the same as the 45?

Without being to A/B compare, I have every reason to believe that the 7" single had the same version as the one on the soundtrack CD / LP.
The "rock mix" seemed to be released in connection with an extended remix (perhaps edited from this extended version), and this rock mix was shorter by a few seconds than the LP / 7" version.
