does anyone have any of the cds that conatains the 4:08 45 version of the song that does NOT have the drop out in the left channel at the 0:42 mark of the song?.....the cd "greatest hits 1976-1986" conatins a drop out at the 0:42 mark of the song which is not present on the 45 version.......just hoping one of the other cds with the 45 version on it does not have this drop out.....it can only be heard while wearing headphones.....

I have the Greatest Hits 1970-2002 set and just checked the notes I made about it. Lo and behold, for "Sad Songs (Say So Much)" I made the notation "dropout at 0:42". So don't bother checking out that CD.

All cd's in the database that are the 45 version have the dropout at :42.

I'm listening to a copy of Jim's 45, and his promo vinyl has the dropout for the regular 45 version, but it's NOT on the "remix" promo 45 version.

So is it possible then that the "remix" really is a remix after all?

No, it's not a remix. I've listened to them start to finish multiple times, and there are no mix differences.
Actually, the so-called "drop out" does not sound like a tape drop out. It sounds like the audio cable to the right channel came loose for a split second. This is not your typical sounding "bad tape" dropout.

Brian, I just sent you a short side-by-side comparison of the "remix" and "stock" 45 versions, dubbed directly from the vinyl. Please post your observations after you have listened to it.

aaron....once again you are right on target...my commercial 45 contains the drop out at the 0:42 mark as well.....so the 45 is identical to all the 4:08 45 versions in the db......pat, you should mention that the commercial 45 also contains this drop out.....

Was the "remix" version (promo) faster than the stock 45?

I don't have a stock 45 to compare but I'm pretty sure it's sped up. I recall getting the
remix promo (which I still have) and thinking that speeding it up was ALL they did with
it, and possibly they added some more clipping to it. I just made a comparision. In Adobe
Audition, using Elton John's Greatest Hits CD 1974-1986, speed it up by 1.7%, and the result
matches the alleged remix speed/pitch.
