hello all friends, I would like to ask if someone can
comment on the differences the single of Dream Academy -
"Life in a Northern Town" between the album version and
the 7'' mix, I have both versions and I don't hear the
differences.
According to discogs the estimated time of the album
version is 4:16 (cd), while the 7'' mix runs at 4:16.

Thank you

The notation I have on the song in my library is that the LP
and 45 version are the same. Unless there was a different
pressing of the 45 with a different mix.

All CDs I have in my collection with LIANT on it appear to
be the same mix.

They are the same. I have the US 7" and three CDs with the song.

The 7" and the CDs play at the same speed (within 0.1%) and fade out at the same spot.

The only differences are in where the fade-in starts (up to 1.4 seconds get shaved off) and how much dynamic range compression was used during mastering.

• US 7" (DR 11, :07.6 intro, 4:15.0 total)
Like Omigod! box (DR 7, :07.7 intro, 4:16.3 total, best EQ)
On the Edge 2xCD (DR 10, :06.3 intro, 4:14.7 total)
Rock the First vol. 5 (DR 12, :06.9 intro, 4:15.9 total)

It's kind of a toss-up.

BTW, the Rhino Digital 45 of "Life in a Northern Town" (with its non-LP B-side) is still available:

That's right Willie, this box set called "Religion,
Revolution & Railways: The Complete Recordings" will be
released on February 23, 2024 via Cherry Red Records.

There is a Japanese CD called "Somewhere In The Sun: Best of The Dream Academy" which has a 5:19 mix marked the
"Extended" mix.
