Very surprised that the Theme From Cheers (Where
Everybody Knows Your Name) by Gary Portnoy only reached
#83 in the charts because I remember hearing it on the
radio quite a few times in the NY area. I've had two
copies of the song and both have what sounds like a
slight digital glitch at 1:37 on the word "are." Those
sources are Time-Life "Sounds of the 80s - TV Themes"
and I think "Tube Tunes." (I say "I think" because I
can't seem to find that copy.) Does anyone have a copy
that doesn't have the problem? I'm betting its not on
the original single because it sounds digital to me.

I can't begin to guess what caused that glitch, but yes
it's on the original 45 as well, so it's on the master
tape.
I can see it when zooming in, and it looks like either a
vinyl defect or a digital glitch, but of course it isn't.
It does not sound like a tape splice either so I have no
clue.
Here's video of the 45 playing:

...funny, even though this video is recorded "open air"
you can still hear the glitch. In the video it occurs at
(1:54).

FYI, Time-Life's Sounds Of The Eighties Vol. 32 TV Themes Of The '80s (1996) is digitally exactly 0.56 dB quieter than Rhino's Tube Tunes Vol. 3 The '80s (1995). Both have the glitch at 1:37.

Just heard the song on an album on Napster called
"Keeper" that doesn't have the glitch at 1:37.
Interesting. It sounds like the original recording too.
Sounds like a drum hit at 1:37.

Just listened to the version on the "Keeper" album via
YouTube and the glitch is still there. It's a small
warble on the word "are." Must be on the master tape.

The glitch is on my original Applause label 45, which was
ex-radio station. I think that this track would have
charted bigger as a single, had it been on a larger label
which was equipped to promote it better. The reissue on
Collectables is much more common than the Applause 45 (I
have the only copy I've seen, dug in the wild)
