Sorry, couldn't fit Stevie Wonder's name in the subject line.

I know that there's a pretty good size edit needed in that song to create the 45 version (about a one minute chunk)--hopefully there aren't mix issues or anything like that. But I've only heard the edit twice, so I'm not exactly sure at which point to edit. Anybody know exactly? Thanks!

There are two edits in the 45 single.

Sadly, the edit has yet to appear on any CD, or any of his comps, for that matter. Don't know why, it was a major hit.

Is it two edits, or one edit (from roughly (2:09) to (2:54)) and an earlier fade? That's what it sounded like to me in the dub that Ed sent me.

As I recall the 45 edit could never be made *properly* from the lp version as there was subtle remixing needed at the first edit point to facilitate a smooth-sounding edit.

Also, please don't forget, there was also a special radio edit (with some remixing needed on the intro) to eliminate the Spanish dialogue intro that some lillywhite radio stations didn't want to program.

From the dub that Ed sent me, I do believe you're right about that. It almost sounds like the word "yeah" that Wonder sings right at that edit point starts with the letter "W". I couldn't quite nail that down.

Before my oldies station got Jacked, I had heard them play an edited version of "Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing" a couple of times (including once when I requested it myself, so I could listen for the edit point). Little did I know that the version they played wasn't the single (prolly from TM Century, although I don't know that for sure).

Gentlemen, I have two copies of the original Tamla 45 from 1974. There are TWO distinct edits in the single version. I also do not hear any evidence of a remix.

That is a wicked edit! What I did was concentrate on the drums. It took me numerous attempt to get it right.

There must be two commercial copies, because there was only one edit & an early fade on the single I bought (and there was slight remixing to facilitate the edit).

Yes, there were two edits on the special non-gibberish promo version, but that even more obviously needed remixing to create.

I'd love to hear a vinyl dub of your version!!

The commercial single I have has all the gibberish and Frence speaking,and has ONE edit. I am listening to it now. So much for my perfect memory. I am listening to it now. So, that means I made a mistake!

Happens to the best of us. I've screwed up more fades than you can shake a stick at, and botched a few edits here and there. You should hear what my edit of Gerry Rafferty's "Home And Dry" used to sound like! :)

Did the DJ reservice 45 with the shorter intro ever appear on any commercial copies of Tamla 54245? I just now got around to playing (for the first time) the Motown Yesteryear reissue 45 I've had for the last eighteen years, and discovered that it has the short-intro DJ reservice version, which I hadn't heard since 1974.

This copy is Motown Yesteryear Y 584F, with "Living For The City" on the flip side. Deadwax is Y584F-A-62418-15A SC - 3C, which differs from the 62428-S shown on the label (the "LFTC" side label states 62418-S, with deadwax Y584F-B-62418-08C SC - 3C.)

The listed time for this "Don't You Worry..." is - like the commercial 45 - (3:40) but the actual time of (4:00) runs longer than the commercial 45. Is this the same actual time as the 1974 DJ reservice? The matrix number on my original DJ 45 with the full intro is 62423-S.

I don't have a copy of the reservice DJ 45, so it was a real curiosity to me, too. I replaced the intro from the 45 version with that of the Motown Yesteryear reissue 45 and it timed out to (3:16), which puts it right at your guestimate, Andy. I'll have to listen further to see whether it's the edit (or lack thereof) or the fade that accounts for the (4:00) timing on the reissue.

We first played "Don't You Worry..." as an LP cut at my college station, then as the first DJ 45. When the reservice arrived, everyone hated it, because it cut out the whole "Paris-Peru..." bit, which was everybody's second-most-favorite part (the "eee-eee" was number one.) As a result, we never played the reservice, and that was the last time I'd ever heard it.

I think the main purpose of the DJ reservice 45 was to increase the likelihood of getting the record played on the easy listening stations. Innervision's leadoff single, "Higher Ground," never rose above #41 on BB's EZ chart, and while the jazzy Latin groove of "Worry" was much better suited for the adult ear, its intro was not. Another big plus: the Wonder reservice got the radio listener into the heart of the song much more quickly than with the standard intro, just like the later "Rivers Of Babylon" DJ reservice did in 1978. Artistic considerations aside, the strategy worked, as "Don't You Worry..." turned out to be a bigger EZ hit (#9) than pop (#16.)

So, I set out to get this 45 version for a friend, but
along the way I ended up re-creating it. I was sent a re-
creation and it was real close - but not quite "perfect".

Now, it is an edit, not a mixing issue... but they cut it
very oddly which makes it a huge pain to re-create.Had
they simply made the cut just before the drum beat it
would have been easy. Clip, clip, done. But no, they sort
of cut it in the middle of the drum beat so you get a
snippet of the "yeah" and then the "Heyyyyyy" but with
the "H" cut off. Anyway,tha's the stock 45.

The re-service shorter DJ 45 takes the above 45 master,
and replaces the entire "chatter" intro with one quick
piano riff right after the "eee! eee!" ... since that
chatter-free riff never occurs in the 45 or LP, you can't
re-create it...you need that 3.5 sec piece of audio from
the DJ 45 OR the Motown Yesteryear reissue mentioned
above.
BTW, if you take the stock 45 version and replace the
intro with the short DJ intro your result runs (3:15).
But the DJ 45 fades 3 seconds later, at (3:18). This is
because the edited 45 master has a much longer ending
then we heard at the time. Which brings me to.....

The Yesteryear re-issue 45. This 45 has the short DJ
intro AND the stock 45 edit in the middle, yet it runs
(4:00). It's because it has extra music at the end. It
doesn't fade when the DJ or stock 45's fade, it doesn't
even fade when LP does. It keeps on going for 30 seconds
longer than the LP ending.

dubs.
