There is a difference in the mix on the DJ mono side vs. the DJ stereo side. After the instrumental break, and after Chi sings "I'm feeling dizzy and weak", there is no sax on the mono side, but sax is heard on the stereo side.

I don't know how you do it Bill but you come up with some great oddities when it comes to dj versions! Just wanted to point out that the commercial 45, which is stereo, does include the saxophone you refer to above.

How do I keep doing it? I bought about 35 singles yesterday from the freshly stocked showroom at a certain record store previously discussed. So until yesterday I didn't have that DJ copy. I noticed the difference last night.

Over the weekend another Richmond record store had a one day sale where all of their one dollar vinyl lps were 20 cents! So recently I've been picking up a lot of stuff that I didn't have.

On the Chi mono version: I don't have the Columbia Hall of Fame re-issue single on Chi (if there is one), but often, those were the mono DJ versions. So it may be out there. Columbia had a habit of issuing stock stereo 45s, but when they did the Hall of Fame reissues, chose the mono DJ side. Make Me Smile by Chicago, Indian Reservation by the Raiders are two examples of original stereo singles but the reissues were the mono side.

Bumping this up because I have found a vinyl version of Thunder and Lightning that runs longer, at 3:59. I do not have a Chi Coltrane album, the album I have this long version on is the Columbia compilation "Breakout". It's possibly the album version.

It differs from the single as this is obviously the original way it was recorded. I always thought it sounded like a splice right after the instrumental break on the 45. Her breath hinted she was going to sing "ooooh" again, but she doesn't.

For the 45 they spliced parts of this version all around, typical for Columbia in those days. This long version has a verse repeat that was spliced out of the 45 and another chorus.

Does anybody have the LP to verify that this is the LP version?

The database makes no mention of 45 version or LP version on the song which is why I bring it up.

Bill

Hi, Bill.

I don't own the Chi Coltrane vinyl lp, but I do own the 'Breakout' lp and this same full-length version is also on my 'Rock's Greatest Hits' 4 lp Columbia House Musical Treasury set. It's sad this great unedited take hasn't made CD yet.

I do own the Chi Coltrane vinyl LP and on that LP the song runs (3:00) and syncs with the version on Rhino 70929.

I have seen some websites that show the lyrics from that album matching the longer version I am talking about, but the source for those may be import versions of her album.

I'll look to see if there was a second version of the LP with the longer version, but probably not. It could be that Columbia issued the long version either on purpose or by mistake on some compilation albums.

So unless we find out otherwise there would be no notation in the database, although I still believe there needs to be a notation that "Some DJ copies of this song contain a mono version missing some saxaphone".

It may be possible to create a stereo version without the sax part in that spot with some creative digital editing.

Bumping this up because I'm wondering if anyone out there knows if the unedited 3:59 version ever made it to CD in any country.
