As I wrap up 1974, please note that the commercial 45 for this song has a VERY soft, very long fade-in, which was extremely difficult for me to nail exactly. And if somebody with digital software prowess wants to give this one a go, I will certainly defer to your talents. Nevertheless, I believe I got it just about right. My commercial 45, which is stereo, has a listed time of (5:15), but an actual time of (5:11). The 6 current database listings for the "hit" version show times between (5:07) and (5:12). My main point here is that I'm quite confident that the listed (5:15) 45 time is at least 3 seconds too long, fade-in or no fade-in.

And I'd just like to add that I have the promo 45 and it has 2 of the most awkward edits I've ever heard in my life, including the way it starts.

ACTUALLY, back in 1974, the promo 45 version is the version I remember hearing on the radio locally. Granted, it detracts away from the story of the song, but the promo 45 doesn't make the song sound as sad IMO.

OK, now I'm lost. I know "Taxi" has a soft fade in...but WOLD does not fade in at all...not that I have ever heard. Is there something before the guitar intro?

If you ever wanted to know if W*O*L*D was inspired by a DJ, it was... A web site maintained by the son of the late DJ Jim Connors was recently updated. The late Jim Connors worked here in Erie before on to Boston where he met Harry Chapin, while at WMEX.

I had created a promo edit of this song years ago and
decided to give it a try again.
There was a promo 45 on YouTube I used as a guide.
Listed time is 3:56, actual time is 4:01, which is a
time I had indicated originally in the promo 45 edits
thread.

I found some details on Wikipedia:
This hit song was inspired by radio personality Jim
Connors, who is credited for having discovered Chapin
and promoted his hit, "Taxi," through Boston radio
station WMEX, where he was the AM Drive time host.
After the debut of "Taxi," Chapin sat in on a phone
conversation Connors was having with his ex-wife while
in studio at WMEX. This conversation led to a deep and
personal discussion during an interview both on and
off the air between the men. They talked about life,
the business, marriage, divorce, happiness, and all
the troubles associated with being a DJ and the music
business at the time.
After leaving WJET in Erie in late 1971, Jim Connors
went to WMEX in Boston from late 1971 to late 1972.
His next stop was WYSL in Buffalo in 1973-1976.

To add to the story, Jim's ex-wife, Linda, who he must
have been talking to that day, still lives in Erie.
His daughter from that marriage, Jamie, also still
lives in Erie and is a realtor. They don't like to
talk about the bad times, rather reflect on the good.
After Boston, Jim went to work in Buffalo at WYSL. He
got married again and had, a son, Jim, Jr. He may have
had other children from that marriage. I've talked
occasionally to Jim, Jr. through Facebook. He looks
alot like his Dad.
Jim Connors, the subject of WOLD, died in 1987 in a
car crash.

If I recall, didn't Harry Chapin die in a car crash, too? How eerie. One person writes about another person (basically, about growing older), and then both die the same way.

Harry Chapin actually died of a heart attack but, yeah, he unfortunately
crashed his car into a semi while doing so. Thankfully, he didn't take
anybody else with him.

i read Charlie Daniels band "Uneasy Rider" was heavily edited, and not just bleeped, for radio.
"UNEASY" PERFECTLY describes ANY story song edited so the storyline is lost!
