I picked up a DJ copy today, lengths are printed as 2:49/3:21 but run 2:50/3:24. Short side states "without verse", long side states "with verse" which refers to the spoken/sung intro on the song.

You can't re-create the short version. The short version starts at the point where she says, "Begin to color.. meeee". If she didn't sing the word "meee" you could start it right there and have the short side which mixes that vocal out.

Of course with the intro gone the song doesn't make as much sense..

The version I remember hearing back in '63 was by Kitty Kalen (which has a listed time of 3:16). I don't ever recall hearing that one without the spoken intro. Never heard Sandy's version until I picked up the promo single at a record show some time in the 80s.

A 3+ minute song was a rarity in 1963.

I have finally picked up the promo 45 copy that Bill Cahill describes in this
thread's opening post. Both my Colpix 669 listed/actual times and
without verse/with verse notations are the same as his. My intro times are
as follows: :03 for the longer, "with verse" side, and :08 1/2 for the
shorter, "without verse" side.

As Bill also noted, the entire opening vocal verse, which is approx. :30
seconds or so and ends with "begin to color me", are removed for the
promo 45's shorter version.

Right at this point, however, in the longer version, there is a brief (around
:08 seconds long) catchy guitar segment that to me is utilized to create
the unique, longer intro found on the shorter, "without verse" side.

To my ears, the opening vocal line of the shorter, "without verse" side is
*not* the "begin to color meeee" lyric that Bill noted above. To me, that
entire line is completely excised on the short version. Instead, I hear the
short version's opening lyric to be exactly the same as the first line of the
longer version's second verse, which starts at around :42 of the longer
version: "these are the eyes that watched him as he walked away." I do
fully agree with Bill about the song not making nearly as much sense
without its opening verse intact.

Without possessing digital editing skills, I cannot personally attempt to
recreate the short version from the long version. But I am convinced it can
be done and done correctly. To me, "harvesting" the brief guitar interlude
between verses 1 and 2, I'm guessing, to make the shorter version intro,
while not a piece of cake, should be quite possible for guys like Mark and
Aaron to re-create in a few minutes, tops. I will forward the needed audio
to them, to address at their convenience. I also believe that the remainder
of the short and long versions are 100% identical to each other, starting
from the opening line of verse 2 (noted in the last paragraph) until the
end.
