This is just terrible for a official release.

Even for a lesser artist this would be a major problem, but
this is MADONNA we are talking about. They're spending a
million dollars to promote this?

I was just listening to "Lucky Star" on the new compilation and realized it's a different mix from "Immaculate Collection".

The original "IC" version uses the same edit points as the 1984 45 version, which enables all incoming synth sounds to be present by the time she starts singing.

This "Celebration" mix uses different points ignoring this, so the edit point where she starts to sing is a little abrupt if you listen carefully.

There is another difference at the very end of the track. Both mixes fade sooner than the original 45, but:

At 3:22 after the "but I'm the luckiest by far" line, in the "Immaculate Collection" mix she sings "starlight, star bright, first star I see tonight..." as does the original 45.

On the "Celebration" mix at that same point, the lyrics are "starlight, star bright, baby, starlight, star bright, stay by my side tonight...".

This doesn't seem like a random choice, or maybe it is? Say, they couldn't get a hold of the original IC master, instead a tape with IC mixes that didn't make the final cut? Whatever.

Yeah, the post from SH forum above you lists that among the
many issues with the new album.

Perhaps, a silly question, but do the 45 versions still exist out there? Why couldn't the Celebration collection have used the tape masters from the Japanese CD single collection?

We can speculate many reasons, and even if say we get in touch with someone at Warner, they may not be honest or even understand what we're talking about.

One sure fact is the producer of this compilation didn't care much, and neither did she for that matter.

Even if this was the last release she owed Warner, what happened to her obsession with perfection here? Maybe she learned via Kabbalah that being a control freak isn't healthy which is true, but in this case it would have helped : P

The recent two disc DVD release is better. Total of 47 music videos the way we remember them on MTV and VH1 before reality TV took over.

Santi have you watched the DVD? To me and several others who have it has unacceptable compression, a pixel fest as one of the reviews called it. The previously released videos on Immaculate Collection and 93:99 have FAR better video quality. Audio on some of the videos sounds better on "Celebration" but it is another victim of loudness wars. Everything sounds close to saturation. There are many comments regarding the DVD at the Steve Hoffman forum.

I have no plans to get the CD, but if the DVD has the original video mix of "Express Yourself" with the echo on the line, "Do you believe in love" (which I hear it does), I might have to get it.

I agree the DVD set is not flawless, however it's still better than the two disc CD set. I figure some of these music videos are over two decades old. They really messed up the CD set up good by including most of the incorrect or lousy versions/mixes. Better off just downloading "Into The Groove" and "Celebration" since those two may be the only tracks worth getting out of 36.

It doesn't seem Madonna compares about the music very much. Not only is this release a travesty, but she was on David Letterman a couple nights ago and she didn't even sing! She just ate pizza (and talked). I wish she'd care more about her music.

Vinny Vero, who was a marketing and A&R executive at EMI from 1990-1996 and has himself produced numerous compilations by major artists, skewers the new "Celebration" compilation in a blog post called "Celebration Frustration." He's particularly critical of the lost opportunity to issue the rare 45 versions on CD for the first time.

My favorite part:

Vinny Vero wrote:
It's as if someone gave the job of compiling this collection to an intern for their summer credits.

I just had the opportunity to hear this CD. "Like A
Prayer" is not the album version. Madonna's vocals, and
the choir is mixed up loder, and the drums are more
aggressive in this mix. Most of the album cuts, like
"Dress You Up" sound like they were remixed, too.

It sounds as if several tracks were sped up, too.

To me, this set is almost as useless as the "Immaculate
Collection".
