I believe I've found the 45 version of Frijid Pink's "House of the Rising Sun." It's on a two-disc import CD from Time-Life Australia called "Flower Power Generation - 1970" (TL FPG/06). I got it used today for $9.99.

Anyway, the song is mono, runs an actual 3:24, and the liner notes say "Courtesy of Universal B.V." Don't have the 45 to compare, but Whitburn lists 3:23 for this song, so it sounds like this is probably it.

Any chance you could forward me an MP3? I've been looking for the single version for an ongoing personal project.

Yeah, but I'll have to do it from work, since I don't have DSL at home, so give me a day or two.

You got it. And thanks.

Does anyone know if the LP version of Frijid Pink's "House of the Rising Sun" can be edited to create a stereo version of the commercial 45, or is there something unique to the 45 version that would not make this possible?

Just knocked another title off the "never on CD" list.

I've found "Battle Hymn of Lt. Calley" by C. Company featuring Terry Nelson. It's on a German CD compilation called "Pure Rock 1971," part of a German series called "The History of Rockmusic." To my knowledge this is the only CD issue of this song. And it's in true stereo -- the 45 version was mono.

But the stereo version is mixed very differently from the mono 45. For one thing, the stereo runs longer -- they complete the chorus of "glory glory hallelujah" that is faded out on the 45 -- and also there is MUCH less reverb on the stereo mix.

Additionally, the spoken vocal is much less prominent in the mix, which makes it sound so different that I initially thought it must be a rerecording. But I carefully A/B'd it with the mono 45, and the vocals match breath for breath, inflection for inflection. It is definitely the same recording.

There's no copyright year on the disc, but I don't think it's a bootleg. It's put out by a company called SR International. "Lt. Calley" is definitely from a tape source. There ARE copyright credits for each individual song, though. "Lt. Calley" says "Unknown - Copyright Control, (P) 1971 Sun - Under licence from Charly licensing ApS by agreement with SHONE TONE MUSIK SERVICE, Hamburg."

I wonder if this stereo mix was done back in '71, or if it's a newer remix.

Four Preps - "More Money For You And Me"
Jesse Lee Turner - "The Little Space Girl"
Both the 45 edit (albeit in stereo) of "More Money For You And Me
(medley)" and a fine copy of Jesse Lee Turner's hit are available on The
Golden Age Of American Rock'N'Roll: Special Novelty Edition
(2003,
Ace CDCHD 980). It even has Jimmy Cross' "I Want My Baby Back" in
stereo! (The better to hear the coffin lid creak, my dear.)

The listed time is (3:23) but what is the actual time? Can anyone with the original Parrot 45 time it for us please. Thank you in advance.
