Jim reports his commercial 45 copy of Elton John and Kiki Dee's "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" has an actual and printed run time of 4:23. Currently, the song's database CD appearances have times ranging widely from 4:20-4:32.

Yeah, a longer version made its debut in 1990 on the "To Be Continued" box set, and has been used on several compilations since. Same with "Lucy in the Sky." Apparently they went back to the original-original masters for that set.

I just heard the original demo (via Barry Scott's Lost 45 online show) with just Elton doing both parts. This demo hasn't been on CD yet. Sounded pretty good too.

The first CD to feature "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" was MCA's Greatest Hits Vol. II (copyright 1977, CD release 1985). This whole CD sounds dreadful, as if they cut the entire high end to mask tape hiss. Avoid GH2 at all costs.

Slightly better, although also from high-generation source tapes, is Silver Eagle/Warner Special Products' 2-CD Dancin' The Night Away (1988). The tail of the fade is shorter here than on most of the other discs. The same analog transfer is used for Priority's Mega-Hits Dance Classics Vol. 10 (1991), but it's about 6 dB louder and clips a bit.

Slightly better still is Time-Life's Sounds Of The Seventies Vol. 4 1976 (1989), which has a longer tail on its fade than the above discs. There are digital clones on Time-Life's 4-CD Great Love Songs Of The 70's And 80's Vol. 4 Endless Love (1991; digitally exactly 0.5 dB quieter), and Time-Life's 2-CD Singers And Songwriters Vol. 4 1976-1977 (2000; digitally identical).

And even better still is the 4-CD To Be Continued (1990), which has a longer version than anything released earlier. The fade starts in the same place, but extends out 7 seconds past the end of the 45. I like the sound on this version. There's a digitally identical clone on Geffen's Greatest Hits 1976-1986 (1992).

And the best sound of all goes to Rhino's Billboard Top Hits 1976 (1991), which runs out to the 45 length (fade matches the Time-Life discs).

To my ears, the best sounding copies of "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" and "Lucy in the Sky" are on the single CD "ELton John Number Ones". I assumed that this
release would be just typical clones but to me, both tracks sound superior than other releases mentioned above. On "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" the length
matches the OST Gnomeo & Juliet so it may be the same dub as that, both are the longest issued at 4:32. "Lucy" sounds like it's from a better tape source than
any other release that I own including "To Be Continued", again, at least to my ears, although it fades oddly at the end, as there's a quick drop for no
apparent reason.

Nothing to add to the main topic, I just want to say that I'm looking forward to Ron posting his "1976" library info here in the (hopefully) near future.

Distant future, most likely!

The only substantial time I get to do music-y stuff nowadays is when I have the little one strapped to me and he's napping.

Just read to him from the 1981 section of the Pop Annual...that should put him to sleep for awhile!

To Paul Haney:

Nice subtle, humorous dig on the chart music of 1981!

Hey, I enjoyed a lot of the doldrums-pop from that year!

1981, a year when "The Best Of Times" by Styx was considered rockin', is not my favorite.

I can bear it only because I was 13 and was deeply engrossed in following chart progress on American Top 40. "Physical" logged 10 weeks at #1! "Endless Love" logged 9 weeks at #1! "Bette Davis Eyes" logged 9 non-consecutive weeks at #1, ruined only by a one-week stay at #1 for Stars On 45! And "Waiting For A Girl Like You" spent 10 weeks at #2, never making it to #1! Such drama!

Some of the songs from 1981 have held up nicely, but on the whole, pop radio in the US was just a little off. When Charlene can hit the top 5, but "Super Freak" can't, something's amiss.
