Pat:

I have what appears to be a 2001 digitally remastered U.S. pressing of The Band's Rock of Ages CD not currently listed in the database. It was released under Capitol 30181 and contains the Top 40 hit "Don't Do It". I believe it's the LP version though it only runs 5:00, which is a different length than any of the song's other CD appearances to date. I'm not real familiar with the full LP version, but I believe this pressing removes the 1:38 introduction and the applause runs longer at the end.

Speaking of "Don't Do It", a while back I tried editing the LP version to match the 45 but couldn't do it because I seem to recall the audience applause was different. How would this be possible if the 45 and LP both consist of the same "live" performance?

For whatever reason, extra audience sound was added to the beginning of the 45. Maybe to make it obvious that it was a "live" recording.

I don't know if that audience sound was found elsewhere on the album, or if it came from a sound effect record.

I always found it interesting how many live albums were "sweetened" in the studio, or completely recorded in the studio, like Jan & Dean or the original Beach Boys Live album.

Todd, I just bought the remastered edition of "Rock Of Ages" and the indexing is totally different than on the original release of this cd. For starters, Capitol now assigns the introduction its own track assignment and for some reason they dropped the first :16 of the introduction when they did this. The applause at the end of the song is also indexed differently so that's how they come up with the strange time of (4:59) for the track "Don't Do It".

Regarding the Beach Boys Concert! Album, are you saying that it was sweetened up in the studio or are you saying it was entirely done in the studio? I know the person who was the emcee at the two concerts recorded to create the album, he insists the album was not sweetened up in the studio, unless they took bits of audience tape from other parts of the concert and overlapped it during editing, the concert performances themselves were entirely live on stage, not live in a studio.

Well Tom,

At least SOME cuts on the 'Beach Boys Concert' album are studio; take a listen to "I Get Around"--It IS the Hit take, sped up, with audience added, overdubs eliminated (but it's mixed so differently it's weird).

Oops, sorry to threadcrap a "Don't Do It" thread...

Andy

I have a CD of Beach Boys sessions where you can hear them recording the "live" Little Old Lady from Pasedena" in the studio. Not a legitmate CD release of course but these were taken right from the multi tracks.

Is the correct LP version of "Don't Do It" with full intro still available anywhere? Seems all the iTunes versions are the ones split up with the intro given its own track
(and shorter).
