Peaking at #48 early in 1966 this doesn't come up as a
topic often, but I throw myself on the mercy of the
experts! I'm looking for the U.S. 45 version on CD.
The U.S. 45 is a different take from the UK one as they
changed a line. But instead of editing it, they re-cut
the entire vocal.
Does anyone know if the U.S version appeared on any CD
anywhere? I've found 3 different Cd's and 2 downloads,
and all are the original uncensored version.
For those less familiar, the original lyrics at about :40
secs in were "by stimulating birth control we're wanting
less to eat".
That was not gonna fly on US radio so they changed the
line to "..they butchered up the sacred cow they got a
lot to eat".
Thanks in advance if anyone knows....

Mark, I asked Jim the very same question back in April ("It's Good News Week" had been a consensus top-3 hit here in Mpls-St. Paul.) Thanks to him, we can definitely say the U.S. version was included on Rhino's 1991 Songs Of Protest compilation CD, which is unfortunately out of print.

MM,
It is also on Varese CD "25 Hits from The British Invasion" (stereo). Yah,
is it mono or stereo on Songs Of Protest?

I have it on a Canadian import (Warner Strategic Marketing Canada) called The Ultimate British Invasion Collection. Believe it's in stereo, but has
the "sacred cow" line.

I've only heard the U.S. version with the less controversial lyric. BTW, that "different" lyric is sung twice in the re-recorded version that became the U.S. single.

FWIW, I have both versions of the song issued on two
separate Parrot promotional 45's, and I believe both got
issued as stock 45's as well. Unfortunately I am not
currently able to pull them from storage to give details
on their deadwax information, as I only passed by them
(both, together, and I'd noted on the sleeves which
version was which), last month while pulling 45's for a
massive sale to clear out space in my storage locker
(they didn't get pulled for sale, of course, so they are
still in the locker somewhere).
