my commercial 45 issued as mca 52471 states a run time on the label as 3:52 and does indeed run that length and is an edit of the full length 4:18 cd/lp version...this 45 info should be added to the db.....

Wow - that was a cool song. See I never realized until recently that he died almost fifteen years ago. The other time that happened was Roger Troutman. Only five years ago I learned he was killed in 1999. I hate when I go on thinking someone is still with us and then find out otherwise way too late.

The LP version runs 4:18 on MCA's I Can Dream About You (1984), where it runs 115.3 BPM throughout and sounds great. Unfortunately, this disc is rather expensive.

The LP version runs 4:15 and 115.1 BPM throughout on Chaos/Columbia's Dan Hartman anthology Keep The Fire Burnin', which is significantly less expensive. Unfortunately, this disc is mastered way too loud and clips significantly.

That's pretty much it for the LP version.

The 45 runs 3:52, and can be edited down from the LP version.

Here are editing instructions, using I Can Dream About You as the source:

There's a little bit of silence at the beginning of the track, so that the first little knocky percussion sound kicks in at 1.0 seconds. My timings below leave in the silence.

Segment 1
6.5 beats long, counting from the first drum machine downbeat
Extends from 0:00.0 to 0:05.5 of both the LP version and 45 edit
Ends a half-beat before a snare hit that starts a clap sequence

Remove the 8 beats from 0:05.5 to 0:09.7 of the LP version

Segment 2
Starts a half-beat before a snare hit that starts a clap sequence
8.5 beats long
Extends from 0:05.5 to 0:09.9 of the 45 edit
Extends from 0:09.7 to 0:14.1 of the LP version
Ends on a snare hit that starts a clap sequence

Remove the 8 beats from 0:14.1 to 0:18.3 of the LP version

Segment 3
Begins on a snare hit that starts a clap sequence
16 beats long
Extends from 0:09.9 to 0:18.3 of the 45 edit
Extends from 0:18.3 to 0:26.7 of the LP version
Ends on a snare hit that starts a clap sequence

Remove the 16 beats from 0:26.7 to 0:34.9 of the LP version

Segment 4
Begins on a snare hit that starts a clap sequence
256 beats long
Extends from 0:18.3 to 2:31.5 of the 45 edit
Extends from 0:34.9 to 2:48.1 of the LP version
Ends on a snare hit that starts a clap sequence

Remove the 8 beats from 2:48.1 to 2:52.3 of the LP version

Segment 5
Begins on a snare hit that starts a clap sequence
Extends from 2:31.5 to 3:54.1 of the 45 edit
Extends from 2:52.3 to 4:14.9 of the LP version

Fade
The 45 fade starts earlier and ends earlier than the LP fade
Extends from 3:38.9 to 3:54.1 of the 45 edit
Extends from 3:59.8 to 4:14.9 of the LP version

Your mixdown will run 3:54.1, with edits at 0:05.5, 0:09.9, 0:18.3, and 2:31.5.

CFTP, you rock!

Jim, you do too; you sent me a copy of the edit to reverse-
engineer, and I hadn't had time to do so this weekend.

I'm thankful for both of you (and everybody on this
board!).
