Would anyone know if there was a 45 edit/version of Graceland? The CD version I have is 4:50 and I have to think there is a shorter one, but I don't have a single. Thanks!

There is a promo version that runs (4:00), on the other side of the full-length version. According to Discogs, all US stock singles were the full-length version.
ETA: Ron (crapfromthepast) has both, looking at his 1987 list. Can the promo be extracted from the full-length version?

Ron, were you ever able to make the comparison?

I'm having a really difficult time replicating the intro. It sounds like there should be just one or two edits to shorten the intro, but I can't pin down where they are.
There's an early fade, too.
I realize that's not terribly helpful, but after struggling with this for an hour, I'm ready to call for backup...

There are two edits on the intro. Starting with the LP version from the "Graceland" CD:
1) Pitch up the entire song by about 0.7%.
2) Edit from the downbeat at 6.5 seconds to the downbeat at 14.5 seconds. (If you're counting bass drum beats, the edit occurs on the 13th beat and cuts out 16 bass drum beats.)
3) With what you have remaining, edit on the snare drum at 12.3 seconds, and cut to the last snare drum before the first vocal at 20.1 seconds.
4) Fade out from 3:51 (on the word "Graceland") to 3:59.

I too am having issues with trying to come up with the
DJ promo edit, even with following Aaron's
instructions.
I have a client that's requested this song for dinner
music at their wedding in a few weeks and I would rather
play the promo edit.

After the pitch up and the first edit, does the edit go
from 12.3 to 30.1 instead of 20.1?
I'm confused.

I think you hit on it, John. I think it works if you edit from (:12.36) to (:32.38). I'll forward my version for comparison to your attempt.

It's always hard to replicate a 45 version or promo edit
without an actual source. My usual source (YouTube)
didn't yield even a video or dub of the promo edit.
Doug, yours sounded smoother than mine in the intro. I
got the first edit right, it was the 2nd one that threw
me as I maybe was a hair off.

I got a few questions about this, so I reproduced Aaron's edit, using the remaster of Graceland as the source, and using my notation.
First, pitch up by 0.7%. Then do this:
Segment 1
Extends from 0:00.0 to 0:06.5 of the LP/commercial 45 version and the promo 45 edit, after 0.7% pitch increase
Ends on a bass drum hit
Remove the 32 beats from 0:06.5 to 0:14.6 of the LP/commercial 45 version, after 0.7% pitch increase
Segment 2
Begins on a bass drum hit
23 beats long
Extends from 0:06.5 to 0:12.3 of the promo 45 edit, after 0.7% pitch increase
Extends from 0:14.6 to 0:20.4 of the LP/commercial 45 version, after 0.7% pitch increase
Ends on a snare hit
Remove the 80 beats from 0:20.4 to 0:40.6 of the LP/commercial 45 version, after 0.7% pitch increase
Segment 3
Begins on a snare hit
Extends from 0:12.3 to 3:59.4 of the promo 45 edit, after 0.7% pitch increase
Extends from 0:40.6 to 4:27.6 of the LP/commercial 45 version, after 0.7% pitch increase
Fade
32 beats long
Extends from 3:51.3 to 3:59.4 of the promo 45 edit, after 0.7% pitch increase
Extends from 4:19.5 to 4:27.6 of the LP/commercial 45 version, after 0.7% pitch increase
Your mixdown, after the 0.7% pitch increase, will run 3:59.4, with edits at 0:06.5 and 0:12.3, and a fade from 3:51.3 to 3:59.4.

Thanks, Ron. So it appears I hit it pretty close.

Well, THAT makes sense. :)
The second edit is 20.1 seconds in length from point a
to point b, not the edit at 20.1 seconds in.
Thanks, Ron and Aaron!
