Real Gone is promoting a new Grass Roots set with 23 Chart
Hits from the Dunhill/ABC Label. All Singles Presented in
Glorious, Original Mono, Most for the First Time.
Fantastic-Sounding Set Is the Result of a Worldwide Search
for the Best Sources. If it's true, this could be big and
maybe hope that more Dunhill singles masters can be found.

I didn't realize the "uncensored" version of Let's Live
For Today had made it onto a mono 45 on Dunhill (or maybe
it didn't and they're including it so the set has the more
familiar version people remember from oldies radio).

I wonder why ALL of the songs are mono, when some of the
later singles had mono/stereo DJ pressings where the
stereo sides did match the mono sides (yet were still
different from the stereo album versions -- I believe I
read about one or two songs like that on this very board,
anyway).

You have to own the DJ copy of "Two Divided By Love" to get the longer fade in stereo, and you need the DJ copy of "Glory Bound" to get the re-done drum track in stereo. The public was offered mono versions of these songs on 45 but only radio got these differences in stereo.

In another thread, Pat mentions that there are two commercial pressings--one with the uncensored lyrics. The uncensored 45 can be seen and heard on this YouTube video:

One posssible explanation for the later singles also being in mono is that those were the only tapes they were able to find. Considering the infamous Dunhill master tape purge I'm extremely stoked that they found these.

Bill is correct that all of the songs on the CD were issued only in mono
on the commercial 45s.

I received my copy of this new release today. I've been
listening to it and so far I must say the sound is very
good. I believe we have Aaron K. to thank as he was a
part of this project for Real Gone Music. Perhaps Aaron
can share some info on the tapes and/or other sources used
(some of us may want to know where the tapes were found
and/or any other interesting tidbits).

Thank you for the compliments, Santi. Yes, I did have a big part in
getting this CD released, and it's the first officially released disc that
has my name in the credits as "mastered by." There was one other
forum member who had a hand in it, too, and I thank him for his
contributions.

If you have been looking for the Grass Roots mono singles on CD, I
highly encourage you to pick it up. The sound quality is excellent, as
Santi notes, and they are ALL the correct mono mixes found on the US
stock 45s.

Aaron, congrats to you and the "other" member on the Grass Roots CD! They couldn't have found anyone better suited for the job. Looking forward to hearing the correct mono mixes. Thanks also go out to my buddy Ed Osborne for his tireless work over the years on these wonderful compilations.

I meant to post as well, but I've been swamped with work. Very impressed with the set! I was expecting a hiss factory like the Sundazed Mamas & Papas mono sets, but was pleasantly surprised. So, Aaron, any inside info about any other Dunhill single masters being unearthed? Or are you not at liberty to say?

Hi Aaron. I'm definitely going to pick this up now. Can you provide any info on where the tapes came from? The re-appearance of these mono Dunhill tapes has many of us hopeful that more will surface.

Thanks, Paul & bitman! I appreciate the kind words! Given the competitive nature of the business and the potential for future releases, I'm not really at liberty to share anything that isn't in the liner notes. It was definitely fun to be involved in the project, and I certainly hope I get the chance to work on another one.

I received my copy today, EXCELLENT work on this release. Gives you a great comprehensive collection of the original singles.

The only discrepancy I can find is on "The River is Wide". First, I am comparing to my stock 45 which has a label time of 2:30 and an actual time of 2:35. This CD runs 2:38.

I lined up my 45 with the CD The reason I checked this song is because it sure sounded slower on this CD than I had heard it before. I admit that there could be multiple pressings of the 45 with different speeds, or my copy could be a sped up bootleg (as there were a lot of Dunhill boots), but I don't think it is. It is a slower pitch on this CD than my 45.

Maybe somebody else has a 45 that does match up in speed. Mine doesn't.

Bill, this must be a case of multiple 45 pressings. I have in front of me an original styrene Dunhill stock 45 with deadwax "01299" on one side of the runout groove and "(delta)75492" on the other side. The printed time is 2:30, and the actual time is 2:38.

I also just pulled out a copy of the promo 45 of "The River Is Wide." It has the same deadwax as the stock copy I have and same actual run time.

Aaron, etc.:

Sounds great! I have many Grass Roots 45's, some in "mintish" condition, and the sound on this disc is superior to those. Thanks to all involved in getting this cd released. I look forward to more projects like this one and, quite honestly, if it has your name (and/or Ed Osborne's name) in the credits, I'll buy it, as I know you guys are very meticulous when it comes to the finer details.

On a personal note, the singles The Grass Roots put out in this time period are some of my favorite songs of all-time. And, actually, a former member of the band lives in my hometown (Dennis Provisor), although I don't know him personally.

I figured there was more than one speed issued on "The River is Wide", my deadwax has 01299 on the A side and 01300 on the B side.

Jon O, thank you very much for the nice compliment! It really means a
lot and makes me very happy to hear all the great feedback on the
sound quality. I also agree that Ed Osborne did a great job on the liner
notes, and my first chance at seeing the completed CD and booklet
was just today.

I'm also thrilled to see that the CD had spent the last couple days in the
top 100 best selling CDs on Amazon and top 50 best selling CDs on
CD Universe. THANK YOU for buying the CD. Thank you also to
Gordon at Real Gone!!

Let's hope it continues to sell well in coming weeks. The
positive word of mouth certainly helps. "Heaven Knows" is
my favorite track, plus I had never heard the censored
version of "Let's Live For Today" until this collection.
