Mine is on order as well. Can't wait to hear it! I've been privileged to hear Aaron's audio mastering work in the past and all I can say is it's about time it appears on a commercial CD for many to enjoy.

Same here, Mark! I just got the CD and it is excellent!
It's remarkable how close most of these are to the
original 45s. Nice job, Aaron!

Except..."Sooner Or Later" is bass-heavy compared to my
original 45 and the stereo mix.

I received my copy yesterday, and what a delight it is to hear these single mixes sounding so good when we've been led to believe for thirty years that we'd never see them released on CD. Many thanks to all involved!

My copy arrived last week, but I forgot to post comments.

As far as sound quality goes, I think it's basically
flawless - certainly as good as we'll ever get from the
Dunhill singles.

Excellent volume levels and track-to-track uniformity,
excellent dynamic range (no brickwalling or clipping), no
added compression/limiting, excellent EQ, no audible
artifacts from noise reduction, no truncated or shortened
fades.

I specifically listened for artifacts, and I couldn't
tell which tracks were from vinyl and which were from
source tapes.

Nicely done, Aaron. Let's hope there are more projects
in the pipeline for your mastering skills!

I just received my copy yesterday, and listened non-stop last night to the whole thing.

I can't echo Ron's and everyone's feedback enough. Beautiful EQ, super clean sources.

I had read last year (and heard through my grapevine) that a search was under way, including other countries, for any Dunhill single masters that may have been copied and sent elsewhere. Well, I think what we have here is the first fruit of that labor.

Awesome job, Aaron. The sound on this set is beyond perfect!!

Thank you so much to everyone who has left me positive feedback. It really means a lot to know how much everyone is enjoying hearing all of the mono mixes finally on CD after all these years. You guys are the best!

Aaron, I bought it too. I love the Grass Roots, and the sound is, as everyone has said, amazing. :)

Add me to the list of fawning KannoKadets! :) A top-notch job from top to bottom. Great job, Aaron!

As for the bass boost on "Sooner Or Later," I have absolutely no problem with it, having done exactly the same thing when I'd made my own vinyl transfer. It's one thing to keep things historically accurate when presenting a song with such anemic bass as a standalone 45 RPM single, and another to help make a song's bottom end sound a bit less wafer-thin amongst its twenty-three fellow Roots 45 brethren when heard within the context of a compact disc collection. I believe the producer made the right choice for this particular project.

Am now looking forward to The Thomas Group's The Complete Original Dunhill Singles collection. ;)

I think you'd really love my mono 45 vinyl transfer of
Richard Harris' "McArthur Park". I'm not joking.

When I did my transfer of the "Sooner Or Later" 45, it
had more weight than the stereo mix, so I thought it was
perfect. The relative lightness in the bass makes the
song more of a fast-paced pop song.

I'm not taking away from Aaron's excellent work. I love
it. But, I would have not boosted the bass as much. I
hope he's not getting offended by my opinion, because I
love the CD so much it stayed in constant play the whole
week after I bought it, and used most of the tracks to
update my year-by-year comps.

Grant, I would love to hear your needledrop of MacArthur Park.

And no, no offense taken to the bass comment. I'm glad everyone is
enjoying the CD so much!

By the way, I listened to "Sooner Ot Later" on the CD again just now.
Even if it does have more bass than the 45, it still doesn't have as much
bass as many of the other tracks on the disc--at least listening on my
system.

Thanks, because I have nothing but respect for you, and
the fine work you've been doing all of these years. I'd
like for you and others to hears some of the work i've
been doing over the years.   For me, it's all bout getting
these vintage single and promo versions back out there.
Even if the world can't enjoy 'em, we can.

Aaron, my Grass Roots CD just came in the mail and it's
given me such a greater appreciation of this band. The
stereo mixes just didn't work for most of these songs and
these punchy mono mixes make you wonder why even some of
the lesser hits didn't chart higher.   Great job on this
one. Please keep us posted about your next project!

I've been on a hiatus from the message board over the past couple of months but I too want to chime in and say that I've purchased the Grass Roots The Complete Original Dunhill/ABC Hit Singles CD and am thrilled to see our own Aaron K. getting some well-deserved credit and widespread exposure for his stellar mastering work! It's also awesome to read all the glowing reviews on retail sites like Amazon praising the CD's sound quality... I mean, when you have audiophiles saying they can't even tell which, or if any, of the tracks came from vinyl, then you know Aaron has done a fantastic job! I can't wait to see what other compilations Gordon Anderson of Real Gone Music may have lined up for the future.

And if I may reiterate a friendly suggestion to my fellow "Top 40 Music on CD" aficionados here... In this day and age where overall industry CD sales are rapidly declining and increasingly becoming more of a "niche" product, I'd like to encourage everyone to support independent labels like Real Gone Music, Eric Records, Collector's Choice Music, etc. by visiting their respective websites and purchasing their CD titles directly. Even if their prices are a dollar or two more than what the major retail online stores may offer, you are allowing more of your dollars to go directly to these labels that truly care about the music and sound quality and in the process you're helping them save on distribution and "middle man" costs. The more money we can help make for these labels, the better our chances of seeing more exciting new releases like the Grass Roots CD in the future!
