does anyone know where i could find the original mono
versions of frankie laines 2 1955 songs 'humming bird' and
'a woman in love' both issued on columbia.....i have a cdr
copy of both but it's clearly a re-recording as they sound
nothing like the columbia 45's.....any direction would be
welcomed.....i know the bear family box set has the
correct mono versions, but that set is very, very
expensive....i was looking for a cheap, more economical
solution...

The Stony Brook, NY, library has a copy of the Bear Family set, Ed. Maybe you can get an interlibrary loan. EDIT: Oh, wait, never mind. That's a university library, so they wouldn't loan things.

Hi Ed, I just dug out my 45's of both songs and did a comparison just to make sure this info is correct. It is.

Humming Bird appears on the Sony Special Products CD "I Hear Music" (A 26056). CD says "Digital transfers from mono sources" so it may or may not be from tape. However it sounds quite clean. It's $1.75 on Amazon:

A Woman In Love appears on a Columbia import 3-CD set, "The Frankie Laine Collection(#515056-2). Woman In Love sounds excellent, as does most of this collection. Some really hard-to-Find stuff here, too, but I can tell you for sure, these two are definitely the original 45 versions. It's showing up at $6.68 on Amazon.

Merry Christmas!

I own them both, Ed, as well as the 45's. I did the "CD in left channel/vinyl 45 in right channel" comparison and they were identical.
