I'm starting to think that the original source tapes for some of the Gap Band 45 version were lost at some point.
On this thread for "Early In The Morning", I discovered that Billboard Hot R&B Hits 1982 used a dub from a vinyl 45.
Now, I think I found a vinyl dub for the 45 edit of "You Dropped A Bomb On Me". The version on JCI's Only Dance 1980-1984 (1995) has a very long tail to the fade, and I think I hear surface noise at the end of the fade. There's a differently EQ'd digital clone of Only Dance on Time-Life's Solid Gold Soul Vol. 25 Early '80s (1999).
