According to the database, mono CD appearances of Bobby Bland's "Ain't Nothing You Can Do" run 2:36-2:37, while stereo appearances only run 2:27-2:28. Meanwhile, Joel Whitburn reports the commercial 45 run time at 2:30 in his Pop Annual 1955-1999 book.

This brings me to two sets of questions:

1) What accounts for the discrepency in run time between the mono and stereo versions of "Ain't Nothing You Can Do"? Does the mono simply run longer, or does the stereo contain an edit?

2) Does someone have a copy of the 45 who can report the actual run time? I would assume all copies of the 45 were issued in mono. Thus, it seems odd that stereo CD appearances of the song more closely resemble Joel Whitburn's reported 2:30 run time (assuming his timing info is even accurate) than the mono CD appearances.

All I can add after listening to both the mono and stereo cd appearances is that they are two different recordings but I do not have either the 45 or the original LP to verify a 45 vs LP distinction.

My original 45 (Duke 472) sounds the same as the version on 20th
Century Masters-The Millennium Collection
, and times out to
2:30, although the 45 label lists the time as 2:20.

Paul, this is interesting because I just obtained the 45 of "Ain't Nothing You Can Do" Duke 375 matrix number UV 7154 and it is mono and runs (2:35) not (2:30) as stated on the record label. Could you double check your 45 timing as maybe there are two different pressings of this 45? Mine is exactly the same as all the mono appearances on cd. The stereo versions are a different vocal take and have additional overdubs not found on the mono versions.

Pat, I re-timed my 45, and it's still 2:30, BUT, according to my handy-dandy
45s Price Guide by Tim Neely, my 45 is from 1972, and "Ain't Nothing You
Can Do" is the B-side of "Do What You Set Out To Do." Sorry for the mix-
up, but I never figured they'd release the song eight years later as a B-side.

Thanks for the clarification Paul. Now we still need to find out the source of the stereo alternate take that is appearing on so many of the cd's in the database.

my commercial 45 for the bobby bland song 'ain't nothing
you can do' issued as duke 375 from 1964 states the run
time on the label as 2:30 but actually runs 2:35 and is
identical to the cdr version i have....i believe the dub i
have is taken from the cd 'turn on your love
light'.....this 45 info s/b added to the db...

I own the 2:35 timed example. It is a first pressing sent to WFLI-AM on 3-29-1964 and a stock copy with a "Demonstration-Not For Sale" sticker. It has a stamped date which is the day it arrived in the WFLI mail.

No one has yet come forward with an explanation as to where the stereo version of this song made its first appearance. Anyone have some information on this?

Stereo version was first issued on the Stereo version of the Duke LP by the same name. It was DLPS 78, issued to radio on 5-2-1964 according to the stamped date on the sleeve. Which was the day the LP arrived in the station mail at WFLI 1070 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. We also have the Mono issue sent to us on the same date. The Station General Manager was a Stereo addict and the record labels sent him Stereo LP discs when available as well.

I have a reissue vinyl LP of the album "Ain't Nothing You Can Do" which is on the ABC/Duke label with catalog number DL-78 and even though the label states stereo, at least the track "Ain't Nothing You Can Do" is mono. Kent, can you confirm that the track is really stereo on your vinyl LP and that your stereo vinyl version is the same as what is appearing on the stereo compact disc issues of this song?

I'll dig this LP out of the archives and take it home for comparison with my 45 on the next trip. Sometimes the later ABC/Duke repressings had mono content where there had been Stereo previously, "The Best Of Bobby Bland" being a major example.

The original Stereo issue of Duke DLPS-78 has the same version of "Ain't Nothing You Can Do" as the Stereo version you hear today on CD. The Mono LP has the 45 single version. Two different recordings. I now own a DLPS-78 pressing which is pre ABC/Duke but has the title song in Mono. It is a thinner pressing than the WFLI Stereo original. And was cut by a different engineer. So, the title song in Stereo may be first pressings only.
