What's the issue with the version on "Soul Hits Of The 70's Volume 3"? Is it an "improper edit of the LP version..."? Or another problem? I do not have the 45 with which to compare. thanks.

David,
I mentioned this in an earlier thread, but there's a completely different lyric line :41 into the song, ("I'll Stand Beside You & You'll Feel My Respect...") It's a different version than either the Rhino's 45 version or the HDH LP versions. Actual time on the 45 is 2:54. I'm wondering if it might be on an import somewhere, but I haven't seen it on any domestic CD. Maybe someone can help us.

The odd version, not the 45 version, is also on the import CD's Hot Wax Greatest Hits (Edsel) and Invictus Chartbusters (Castle). I hadn't noticed that before.

Another 45 version MIA

Can the 45 be extracted from the LP?

Here is the vinyl 45, I don't have the long or lp version to compare with, just the "not 45 or lp" version that's on every cd.

Short answer Ed: No. Those lyrics only occur on the mono
45.

I compared all 3 versions:
1) Ed's mono 45
2) the stereo edit on Rhino CD
3) The stereo LP version

You cannot edit the LP version to get the 45 version.
The lyrics in 1st verse between :41 - :51, the first 2
lines, never occur in the LP version.
As for all the rest of it, most of the vocals are in fact
the same ...

so the 3-minute edit on CD is "mostly" the 45 version...
i'd say about 3/4 of it is the same as the 45.

The only other unique parts are the last choruses. The
45 has an edit in the last chorus that removes the 2nd
repeat. The LP version doesn't have that edit, so as a
result fades too soon if you try to re-create the edit -
so you can't make the 45 ending from the LP.

So, it comes down to this: the "neither" version on Cd is
mostly the same take as the 45, except for a total of 40
seconds.
10 secs in the first verse and 30 secs in the end chorus
are unique to the 45.

I also suspect that both the LP and the mono 45 were
edited down from a much longer take that we have never
heard.   Come time to edit the 45, they decided to use
different parts of it, or parts of another take.

The mono 45 is unique. No CD has it. I hunted down a vinyl pressing of this 45 because of that.
