Edit: I just noticed that the 45 version starts off with
a bass drum hit right before the snare. The LP version
cuts off the bass drum hit and starts with the snare.
Drat. This one's not so easy.

My original post follows:

This one's easy.

The LP version sounds outstanding on Geffen's Greatest
Hits Vol. 3 1979-1987
(1987), and significantly worse
on MCA's Greatest Hits 1976-1986 (1992), probably
due to higher generation source tapes. If I believe the
file I have on my hard drive, then the song also appears
on the UK version of the To Be Continued box set,
where it's digitally identical to MCA's Greatest Hits
1976-1986
(1992). Go with the Geffen disc.

Using Geffen's Greatest Hits Vol. 3 1979-1987
(1987) as the source, it's really easy to create the 45
edit:

Keep 0:00.0 to 2:13.8 of the LP version.
Edit at 2:13.8, on the snare hit following the word
"yeah".
Remove the 64 beats from 2:13.8 to 2:41.7.
Keep 2:41.7 to 4:23.0 of the LP version (end).

Your mixdown will run 3:53 (3:55.2 with outro silence),
with an edit at 2:13.8.

Doesn't get any easier than this one!

The actual 45 edit (with opening bass drum hit intact) is on the UK import "The Very Best of Elton John."
