Stated stock 45 and promo 45 "long version" time of (5:32) incorrect - actual time (5:13). Promo 45 "short version" has a listed and actual time of (3:00), and is simply an early fade. This hit #1 in my area - the station did a killer "in-house" short v - just one cut, attaching the great ending of the (5:13) version at around (2:30) into the song. The first record rep I ever knew told me, around that time, that Hijack's Top 40 success caught Atlantic by surprise - and the lack of time and effort given to prepare a quality "Hijack" short version certainly seemed to reflect that. What they did was simply awful, compared to that "in-house."

In that case, is there any other difference between the 45 and LP?

Pat has 5 CD references in the db for a "Hijack" source in the 5:13-5:14 area. To my ears, there is no difference between those and the commercial/long DJ 45 versions, Doug.

Then, what's the nicely edited version I find on a couple of CDs?

I see that in the database, this song is still listed as only the LP version
being available on CD. Is there officially a difference between the 45 and LP
versions? On ITunes, there is a version #2 listed on the Atlantic compilation
LP/CD Right On! Vol. 5. I was curious as to the origin of this
version.

I notice extra percussion on the 45 version between :28 and :47 that I do not hear on the LP version.

Thank you for checking, and I thought I heard extra percussion (a light
cowbell-like sound) at that point, too, on my 45, but the CD version I have
from Let There Be Drums, the 70's has that percussion part, just
slightly quieter. I would maintain that the two versions are the same (other
than the time), but maybe I'm not listening properly. Anyone else wanna
chime in?

i just listened to my vinyl 45 issued as atlantic 3246
versus the cdr version i have....i don't know where i got
it from, but they are, in my opinion, identical....except
the channels are flipped....at the start of the song the
cymbal taps are in the right channel on the 45 while the
cdr version i have the cymbal taps are in the left
channel...in addition the drum taps and subtle clapping
at the beginning is also flipped....my commercial 45 runs
5:15 and i agree with pauleschen that the cd version and
45 version are the same except for the channels
flipped....i do NOT haear any differences in the time
range 0:28 to 0:47 that pat hears differences....BUT, the
drums during that time are flipped as well....
