the commercial cd single issued in 1996 as A&M 1462 contains the "lp version" which runs 4:51 as the first track....in the db it states that the single version was DIFFERENT than the lp version.......does anyone know if the cassingle contains a different version/mix than the commercial cd single?.....

Ed:

A while back, I conducted some research on Dishwalla's "Counting Blue Cars". My notes indicate that the cassette single states "LP version" on the cardboard sleeve and runs 4:51, but I've not heard anything about it actually being a different version or mix. It's been reported that the two-track commercial CD single and the four-track maxi-single both contain the "LP version" running 4:51 as well.

The promo CD single release of "Counting Blue Cars" on A&M AMCDP 0012 and has been reported to contain the following tracks and run times:

1) Edit - 4:21
2) LP version - 4:51

This information should be incorporated into the database. Interestingly, I have what claims to be the "radio edit" of "Counting Blue Cars" on my Promo Only: Mainstream Radio DJ CD series but it runs 4:28. It too is an edit of the LP version, but I believe it contains an extra guitar loop not present on the 4:21 edit. I have not seen an official promo CD single release with this 4:28 edit though.

Does anybody have any additional commercial or promo single info to add?

Todd, we got 2 promo CD singles in for this. The one you have detailed, and "AMCDP 00284", but it is:

1-Acoustic Live Edit (listed & actual 4:32)
2-Acoustic Live Version (listed & actual 5:31)

Sorry, no additional insight on that 4:28 edit.

Jim:

Did you ever play any of the live versions of "Counting Blue Cars" at your station? I think I may have heard them a couple of times on the radio in my area, but the version I'm accustomed to hearing at least 99% of the time is the 4:21 studio edit.

Yes, Todd, we did give the "Acoustic Edit" a least a month's worth of night, mid-day and weekend spins on our station, back in 1996. It was a big song for us.

My entry in the database was based on Joel Whitburn's Hot 100 Annual time for this cassette single which is stated as (4:21). I just ordered a copy of the cassette single and will report back with my findings when it arrives.

I have the commercial cassette single, and yes it lists the version as the lp version (4:51).

Our station also played the acoustic live version, but much less often than the studio edit. Also, I've noticed more than one occasion where Promo Only made their own edits, so it's very possible that the 4:28 version was not officially released.

I can conjure up two possibilities as to why this happens. First, they have a production deadline to meet each month. If the record label hasn't yet sent them the DJ edit of a new release that they want to include, they may have to pull it from the album---either issuing the full length album version or making their own edit. A second possibility is that a song is gaining a lot of airplay even though the record company hasn't released it as a single. They may opt to shorten a long album version as a courtesy to the stations who subscribe. (This recently happened with Akon's "Don't Matter," which is not the official Radio Edit issued by Universal.)

Just got my cassette single of "Counting Blue Cars" and sure enough the label states this is the LP version running (4:51) but it is not the LP version as my copy runs (4:23) which I am guessing is what is called the "edit" on the dj cd single.

pat

are you saying the commercial cassingle states on the cardboard sleeve "lp version" which we know runs 4:51 but that the actual song times out to 4:23?....if that is the case, it's another example of record company carelessness......

Thought I'd bump up this thread since the commercial cassette single info for Dishwalla's "Counting Blue Cars" was never added to the database.

As long as we've bumped this up...

The (4:21) edit is the only version I have on CD, and it
turns up on the promo CDs B.L.A.S.T. Modern Rock Program
#16
, Hot Hits Pop Vol. 44, and Top Hits USA
T319
and Top Hits USA RH37, all released in
1996. It's denoted as "Edit" on the Top Hits discs.
