Although not in the database, this song peaked at #37 in BB, in 12/79. My commercial 45 has a listed time of (3:50), but an actual time of (3:47). To my best of my knowledge, this song has yet to appear on a domestic CD.

I'll second that. However, it is available on at least one import. The song's original 1979 parent album - simply titled "Niteflyte" - was re-issued on CD in 1995 in Japan, which I have. (I obtained my copy through eBay, but a quick check on Amazon reveals that it's apparently still in print.) Label & no. is BMG Victor BVCP-7435. Printed time for "If You Want It" is "(4:31)", but it actually clocks in at (4:29). So based on jimct's post above, there's a :42 length/version difference compared to the 45. (BTW, the song hit only #59 in "Cash Box".) Great funk album - have had the U.S. cassette for years, but only recently added the Japanese CD to my collection...
Note to Paul Haney: As correctly mentioned in Joel Whitburn's book, "Top R&B/Hip-Hop Singles 1942-2004", Howard Johnson was the lead singer of Niteflyte, and went on to some solo success in the early to mid '80s, best known for his 1982 funk jam, "So Fine". And while Niteflyte is printed in bold for cross-referencing purposes in Johnson's bio (pg. 303), Johnson's name isn't in Niteflyte's bio (pg. 431) - so that will need to be fixed in future editions...

After all these years, I never realized Niteflyte's "If You Want It" was available on CD. Thanks for the tip, Greg!

Actually, the 45 version can be extracted from the LP version. Offhand, I don't recall which parts are edited out, but I've been able to do it successfully.

This track is on iTunes with a time of 4:22. Might be the LP version faded early.
