need some help here on this one.....billboard magazine from the time had the reissue of prince's 1982 hit "1999" re-released in 1999 and peaked at number 40 on 1-16-99 for one week on warner 21881.....question is, in what format (ie; cd single, vinyl 7", or vinyl 12") was this single released as...i have the backtrax cd single issued as warner 21881 and it contains the below tracks....
1-1999 (3:37 listed & actual)
2-little red corvette (3:08 listed & actual)
the thing is, that whitburns books list the run time for the single as 6:22....there may have been a 12" released at that time.....paul haney...can you shed any light on this question?
also....the 1982 commercial 45 was released as titled "**1999**" and the 1999 cd single was released as titled "1999".....

Was this chart run referring to "1999: The New Master"? I haven't listened to
my single in ages, but I'm pretty sure all the tracks were re-recordings and
not just remixes.

Aaron's right; there wasn't just a remix, it was a remake, released on Prince's NPH label (I think), not Warner.
Wikipedia claims they were the original tracks with extra instrumentation, but that's not accurate; Prince didn't own the original track, which is why he had to re-record it after his split from Warner.
Here's the press release from the time of release.
IF Billboard is right and it was the Warner release, than the CD you have is clearly the re-charting original single... I wasn't aware 1999 recharted, but it doesn't surprise me; our local AC was pounding it all year.
FYI, I don't think I EVER heard Prince's remake air on any station, CHR or AC.

For the 1999 reissue, we show a catalog number of Warner 21881 (that's the BackTrax CD single of the original version). I'm not sure where that longer time came from, but the time we currently show in our database is (3:35) for that reissue (and this is the time that will appear in our new Pop Annual, due out this coming February).
