I know there are many members on this board who do a fair amount of audio editing or wish they knew how to do it. When exchanging emails with another board member recently, it dawned on me that some people might be interested in going through an online audio editing workshop either to improve their current skills or start learning the basics.

I would be willing to teach a one-time workshop, possibly broken into different segments for different skill levels or areas of interest. For instance, I can share my secrets on how to create great-sounding vinyl transfers, how to replicate single versions and fades, basic editing for beginners, etc.

While there are several people on this forum I know are excellent editors, I'm sure there are others who just need someone to help get them started. And there may be some people who have the basics down, but they want to be able to take their skills to the next level.

I know this is a bit off-topic from what we normally discuss, and I hope Pat doesn't mind me bringing it up. I just thought it to be very relevant to our community, especially since many of us are already doing it.

Aaron, this is an EXTREMELY kind offer on your part. I have been lucky enough to have heard much of your handiwork in recent years, and 100% of it has been both absolutely perfect sounding and clone-like accurate, edit-wise, in every way! I must confess, before you, I was 100% dead-set against EVER having a vinyl dub be my ultimate "go-to" source. But since none of us can "order" the labels to issue everything we want in wav. file quality, I was grudgingly forced to re-open my mind to vinyl dubs. Aaron goes to great pains to locate/utilize only the highest quality original vinyl sources, which makes a huge difference. He also has a God-given ability to perfectly address any and all noise issues. To me, 10 times out of 10, Aaron's vinyl end-result sounds like it has come from a tape source. His copy of Tierra's "Together" is in perfect stereo, and sounds absolutely stone mint! Any Rhino and/or Original Sound CD audio doesn't even come close to his! I would recommend viewing Aaron to any/all editors (including the folks at the labels themselves, and I am DEAD serious here) because I believe no one in the world does it better. But don't believe me - watch him, listen to his results and then decide for yourself!

I'm always interested in learning new noise reduction and restoration methods for vinyl transfers.

I current use Click Repair and the Sony Noise Reduction plugin within Sound Forge but find it difficult to locate the little teeny ticks that are sometimes left behind.

I, for one, would probably learn quite a bit from this type of workshop. Though I've armed myself with some decent tools thus far...(Adobe Audition, Click Repair, AT440mLa cartridge, good sound card), there are times I end up doing a clean vinyl dub vs. taking time to recreate tricky edits. I can't complain up to this point having taught myself Audition and coming up with the perfect settings in Click Repair.

One of the things I sometimes have an issue with is fades. The key is having a vinyl copy to use as a guide. I've been told some of my fades are near perfect, but always looking to improve, along with honing my existing editing skills.

Aaron, when are you thinking of beginning this course?

Not sure, it was just an idea that popped into my head today, and I thought I'd throw it out there to see if anyone was even interested. Depending on the number of people who would want to participate, that would likely dictate how many different sessions there would be and exactly what the content of each one would be.

By the way, it's not a problem if you don't currently have audio editing software. There are free programs that have been mentioned elsewhere on the board. The one which probably has the most notoriety is Audacity.

Ditto what Jim said. There was also a time when I wasn't open to accepting vinyl dubs as permanent additions to my digital library, but I too can attest that Aaron's vinyl transfers are indeed among the best I've ever heard and are about as close to CD quality without actually coming from a master tape source. One major reason for this is that Aaron takes the time to seek out the absolute best condition vinyl available and I know that Jim has been extremely helpful with supplying a lot of mint, and even previously unplayed, vinyl sources from his own collection.

I realize it has been a while, but I wanted to re-extend the invitation for a FREE editing workshop that will take place next month. If you are interested, please email me as outlined four posts above. Here are the details:

BASIC EDITING SKILLS WORKSHOP - Thursday, May 12, 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM Central

This will be for those who do not have editing software or could apply basic editing skills/concepts to any software. I will likely use Audacity as the editing software, since it is free for anyone to download and use, yet it still is a very nice program that has plenty of features.


VINYL TRANSFERS WORKSHOP - Thursday, May 19, 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM Central

This will be for more advanced editors and will be done on Cool Edit Pro / Adobe Audition. I'm perfectly fine with anyone attending, even those who are new to editing; however, I will present the course assuming you have basic knowledge of editing, and it will be faster paced than the basic workshop.

You are also free to invite others not on this board, but I will need to have them email me in advance, so that I can get everyone prepared. In all likelihood, it will be a WebEx or similar presentation software where everyone can log in to see my screen and talk to each other.

I could teach a class like this to reveal my techniques
too, but have no idea on how to go about it. But, I think
I will join this, as it's always fun to see how other
